Samsung DLP TVs?
« on: February 27, 2004, 10:47:29 AM »
Anybody using the new Samsung widescreen HD-ready DLP-projection TVs?  Although still pricey, they seem as if they might be the most likely of the new HD sets to eventually replace tube TVs.

But the price still will have to come WAY down from $4k for the 50-inch.  Not as thin or expensive as plasma, much more compact than tube projection, DLP seems simpler and better at first look.

Check on out on BestBuy site for details.

There is a wealth of info on the Forum-
http://www.avsforum.com/

The biggest issue with the DLP's besides the price, is the Rainbow issue.  Some see them and some don't.  Some don't see them till they read the complaints about them.  The CC salesman here in Honolulu also says the picture shimmers with the cable signal here but they won't even connect it in the showroom.

I went with the Panny RPTV LCD for $2600.  Aces High, Falcon 4  and LOMAC are awesome on 50" and my digital cable picture is great to awesome on the HD channels.  Check this thread.

Thanks, Davenrino.  I've been to Best Buy and Circuit City just about every day the past week and researching on line.  Lots of complaints about DLP bulbs scare me away from that rear projection for the time being.

Hopefully they'll get more solid components and more reliability, and maybe even lower prices in the next year or two.

I came fairly close to buying the top Sony HDTV wide screen tube TV.  But not anxious to anchor a 200-pound TV in the middle of my recreation room.  But, since our digital cable won't be upgraded to HDTV anyway for another year, I guess I'll wait.

I was also surprised how lousy many stands are.  Shape to TV contours usually ignores requirement for at least two large shelves and preferably three or four underneath, or at least room for four components, not just two and never just one.

Decided to keep Aces High separate on its 19-inch Viewsonic computer monitor and spring for the 42-inch Sony LCD projection TV.

This model had a bad problem with bulb burning out too soon but that supposedly has been fixed.  Got a month in which could return for full refund from Best Buy.  Definitely worth a look.  So far, so excellent.

That Sony is very nice.  I actually had one on order for a couple days, but cancelled it to get the 50" Panny.  I really wanted the VGA inputs to simplify computer connections and allow the use of other resolutions besides the native 1280 x 720, or actually some custom res like 1164 x 695 that would be required to get rid of the ovescan with the Sony's DVI only input.

It doesn't get much better than Aces high in widescreen (not stretched) 1280 x 720, digital surround sound, full CH HOTAS, and enhanced TrackIR2!

Mmmm yeah, that is a fabulous setup to fly Aces High.  Someday maybe ... but computer is upstairs and main TV down, so dunno if or when the twain shall ever meet.

I was surprised more big screens are not dual TV/computer compatible.  Someday in the future probably all will be, maybe about the time everything gets to be digital high rez and CRTs go the way of iceboxes.

Thats prolly why there isn't such a demand for compatibility cause most guys aren't  able to get away with this - the wife n kids.  Exactly why I made the Panny MY Xmas present and bought her expensive jewelry.  I turned my office into a theatre/flight-sim room.  Besides, except for movies we don't watch TV together anyway cause her programs are in Japanese.:D
