what's your favorite "worst plane?"
« on: February 27, 2004, 12:52:37 PM »
that is, forget about the 1944 and '45's.  what's your fav ride of the early models.  and why?

mine's the 2-c.  but fm-2 is fun.  saw a guy long time ago land 5 kills in a spit1, tried my hand at that and failed.  sorry i forget his name, but what he did is difficult.  a5 good too.  prob a toss-up tween a5 and 2-c they very different, but both early models and can be flown very sucessfuly in ma.

what's your opinion?

I'd still have to go with the P-38 as my favorite early ride, even though we don't have an early model P-38 in AH...yet.

Same here.  A lot of guys see one and think its an easy kill.  So long as the Ki-61 keeps about 10k feet altitude under it, it can be a nasty opponent.  I've run up 4 or 5 kill streaks in it.  Only landed them a few times, though, because I let myself get below 10k and then I got chased and run down by the guys I just killed.

Another fun ride is the Yak-9T so long as you stay above your opponent.  Its got a howitzer in the nose.

Mosquito.

Then again, I prefer it over the 1944/45 stuff.

Hi

From h2h POV

Hurricane Mk1: Old useles hangar queen with pop guns :)

* I use most of the time d175-200 conver for all mg's. Snap shots to the cockpit and a huge volume of fire which can cause a wounded enemy pilot.

* Everybody knows engine neg G shutdown habbit of Hurri.  Only few knows 0G/-G totally engine shutoff. You must hit E-key for restart.

* Mk1 can fly slowly like kite but beware those flat spins and espesial the invert one.

* Pay attention to the speed, use lag pursuit and surprise roping enemy with your true energy level "WTF?! How ur POS could reach me?!?!"

* Keep snaks, drinks & pillow near you just in case.
You never know when next HO-RUNNER arrive with Temp etc. These guys need at least 5000yard+ extend before reverse for next HO spraying attempt. Zzz Zzz Zzz. Then prepare to hear some whing about _your_ boring fighting style... "Real mans HOing", "Stop those aerobatic moves!", "Just a turner..."

I go with the Ki-61 too.  Yak and La-7 drivers really tend to underestimate it.  Doesn't accelerate very rapidly in a dive but it handles great downhill.  Spits will beat it if the fight gets low & slow.  The 109F is a good match.

The Spit I is a real hoot but it can sure make my hit% look bad.  I wonder if I've ever checked the convergence on those eight spread-out 303's.

FM2

fun ride even though it just lumbers along. Once you get it going though it's a killing machine.

Hopefully AH2 will be more accurate in the modeling of the Ki-61.  In real life, at high speeds the Ki-61 had difficulty in making right turns, which the Allied pilots used in their favor.

This is from Maj. McGuire's, "Combat Tactics in the SouthWest Pacific Area."  If you don't have this little manual, I highly recommend it.  It's written from the combat pilots perspective and includes McGuire's assessment of Japanese fighters, pilots and tactics as well as various P-38 tactics to use against Japanese planes.

Quote

TONY- The usual armament of this plane is two 12.7 mm. machine guns, synchronized through the prop with one 12.7 mm. machine gun in each wing. (Later models have one 20 mm in each wing). With heavier armor and a fair quality of self- sealing tanks this plane does not have the tendency of the OSCARS and ZEKES models to explode or burn unless a very good hit is scored. An in-ine fighter like our P-40’s the TONY is not an altitude fighter but makes up for this by being faster than the ZEKE in level flight and extremely fast in a dive. A successful evasive tactic against this plane is, if in a dive, to make a diving turn to the right. At high speeds the TONY handles very poorly to the right and the Japanese pilot has trouble turning in that direction. If you are pursued from the rear and on the level, a very high-speed, shallow climb will keep you out of the range and eventually you will draw way.
