Where will Terrorists hit next?
« on: March 01, 2004, 12:23:30 AM »
I fear that a U.S. or British commercial airliner will be hit by a shoulder operated missle. In fact, in the short term, I'm worried that shoulder fired missles will become our biggest threat.
Thoughts?

Quite frankly, I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet.  I used to enjoy parking my motorcycle or car at the end of 27R at LAX on the hill overlooking the Pacific  so I could watch all the takeoffs on a sunny day.  It was open until immediately after the attacks in 2001, and then I went up there a couple times to listen to how eerilly quiet the airport was (during the lockdown), but each time after that, I was chased off by police until finally they closed the road.

Even with it closed, short final to LAX is well within range of even homemade stuff, same with the takeoff runs.

On the plus side, when (and I think it will happen soon) the attack happens, it will be against a multi-engine plane, so unless they have a multiply redundant attack (eg, a bunch of SA-7s, REDEYEs, or Stingers), the plane should survive.

As a point of conversation, perhaps the fact that the attack has not happened yet could be interpreted as evidence that Al Qaida leadership still exists and has instructed that no attack take place until one with good odds can be mustered.  As a supposition, the argument is weak (because the evidence can equally suggest that there is no Al Qaida in the US or no MANPAD systems in their hands), but again, it's just a thought for conversation.

Pongo, you're right. But, theres a lot of people in the US who do not think in the terms you mean (globally). I'd even propose the idea that they don't consider Timothy McVeigh a terrorist in the common usage of the word (ie: WTC towers and the Pentagon).

As far as what Al Qaeda (truthfully the only external organization thats against America, in America) will do next. Who knows? But I'd venture a guess that it has nothing to do with taking down a single airliner. They want it to grow exponentially until the populace give into letting the government becoming - for lack of a better description - facsism or communism, and then they'll declare victory and vanish.

You guys are nitpicking my post for the sake of looking wise and worldly.  My point was re: the next spectacular attack on U.S. or others interests.  I'm not denying that people are dying all over in terrorist atacks every day.

Sadly, the word terrorist has been dilluted terribly over the past two years.  A public figure recently called the teachers union a 'terrorist organization'.  Not only that, but the RIAA has called file sharers 'terrorists', and it's just a matter of time before the police are calling every criminal a terrorist as a synonym for 'criminal'.  Of course, there is evidence that this is already starting to happen.

Canadian Security Agency Calls Country Terror Haven, Post Says
March 1 (Bloomberg) -- Canada is a haven for the world's ``most notorious'' terrorist groups, according to a report by country's security agency, the National Post reported.
{snip}
The report is similar to one produced by the U.S. Library of Congress that said Canada's welfare system, immigration laws, infrequent prosecutions and light sentences have turned the country into a ``favored destination for terrorists,'' the newspaper said.

So basicly if it happens it's gonna be horribly big..
