I'm thinking the Broncos wanted the draft pick more than they wanted Champ Bailey.

Partial quote from the article:

Quote
Clinton Portis agreed to an eight-year, $50.5 million contract with the Redskins on Monday, nearly clearing the way for Denver to trade him to Washington for Champ Bailey.

Bailey is close to agreeing to a deal with the Broncos, and the trade could happen later this week.

Portis' deal, one of the richest ever for a running back, includes $17 million in tiered bonus money, according to Portis' agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Portis is set to join quarterback Mark Brunell, who will be acquired in a trade with Jacksonville, in a revamped offense in coach Joe Gibbs' first season back in Washington.

First, however, the Broncos must agree to terms with Bailey, who would be sent from to Washington to Denver along with a second-round draft pick in exchange for Portis. Talks have gone well since Bailey's visit to Denver last week.

Seems like the Broncos can plug in anybody at RB and he will go for 5 yards per carry.  I think it has more to do with the offensive scheme and OL talent than the talent of the RB.  I'm not sure Portis' huge numbers will follow him to WAS.

Tell me of one really outstanding play that Champ Bailey has made that sticks in your mind......

I've been a Redskins fans all my life and I can't do it. He's been cruising on reputation the past few seasons.

I can however think of several really crappy plays that Bailey made in this year alone that stick out in my mind.

Good riddance. We get a 22 year old stud of a running back and more cap space to use on a comparable corner that will cost alot less. (And might even make an interception or 2).

I hope Denver does use him on offense as has been rumored...that'll be a hoot.
