Black Devil of the Ukraine also known as Eric Hartman scored more kills than any other pilot in history. In 1939 Eric Hartman was in school and reached the Eastern front after the 3rd year of the war. His victories did not come in the 1st year of the war against Russia, but later when accumulating victories was more difficult. His first was in October in 1942 and his last came on the final day of the war. Hartman was shot down several times and once was briefly captured. He escaped by striking one of his guards and then jumping out of a truck and running for the woods where he found his way back to German lines.
Hartman survived the war and spent 10 years in a Russian prison.

no no sirloin he actually was shot down or had to bail out for other reasons 16(!!) times.

he was wounded a few times as well.

The truly amazing part is that after 10 years of being a POW he came back to germany and went back into the new formed air force, going as far as flying F104s. Apparantly he had not lost his sharp edge from the describtion of mock combats with allied fighter pilots.

Eric Hartman was quated as never being hit by and enemy fighter.I guess the ditches were buff guns, flak or mechanical failure.I read this somewhere and think it's true but who knows..

The best part about that is the charges that they held him on.  Destruction of Russian property.    :D

His plane was hit by AAA but never in plane vs plane engagements.

His final official score is 94 1/6 victories. But the real figure is probably well over hundred. Many kills left untestified because he had a habit of chasing enemy planes far behind own lines. Once he chased an enemy through Leningrad on the deck.  :)
