I can try to avoid all day long, and on my 'end' it appears I have cleared the enemy plane by an ample amount of space.

Actually 1 thing FA gots right up to a point is the collision model. HOs end up as collisions like in AH but unlike in AH both planes take damage. But they have friendly collisions on so when you nurse a damaged P38 back home some ottobuffguntard, will invariably decided that is the time to take off in his b-17. Or even worse. You are p38 and you have fought an I-16 down to the deck and are about to finish him along comes a killstealer in his f4u4C and rams you.
