Hey Curval - I'm gonna be an accountant!
« on: March 08, 2004, 05:57:04 AM »
Start my new job this week. Three years to qualify, and I should have done this when I graduated three years ago... but better late than never.

Any tips? :D

lol :D

Hey Wilf - played the Far Cry demo on my bro's computer when I was round at his place. Great game - love the Zero. :) Shame my machine is too geriatric to play it. Is there anyway to kill the chopper that kills you if you boat around the island? I killed all the bad guys and tried to get to the chopper by foot, but just couldn't kill the gunner before it came and squashed me. The damn thing doesn't keep still enough for the sniper rifle.

Lol Saintaw,

If he opens a scooter shop he should sell some mopeds too.  The French brands are quite popular here...maybe you could help with the supply and take a cut?

Dowding, you are a smart guy, I have no doubts you can handle the acedemic side of the quaifications.

My only advice would be to try and determine what you are going to do with your CA once you have it.  This will help you decide which type of firm you should approach to do your practical training.

If, for example, you want to go the traditional route and become a partner in a medium to large sized practice you should probably go with a "Big Five" firm.  If you are going to start your own practice or intend to go into "industry" you might be better off in a small to medum sized firm for your training.

The smaller firms are generally able to give you a much broader level of practical experience.

The last thing you want is to be stuck reconciling cash accounts for some huge oil company for the entire term of your training period.

Our firm doesn't like to hire newly qualified accountants who did their training with a Big Five firm.  Many of these guys/girls have never made a journal entry or have even seen a trial balance.

Good luck man.:aok

Cheers mate. :)

I'm actually going to be doing Management Accountancy (CIMA) working for my currrent company (large manufacturing multi-national). They are paying for my exams and all the associated costs, and I'll be qualifying as I work. The business stream I'm in is perhaps in an interesting situation - we are very much in a recovery type situation because of difficult market conditions - so I expect the work to be quite varied.

Just think, its very possible that Dowding could be a subordinate to Grun in a hypothetical situation where Dowding comes to work in the U.S.,  considering your scholastic goals when accomplished. :)

Grunherz gets it in one! I wasn't born to live in this cold, wet climate and need to do something to get out. :D

Seriously though, it is the money and job security. I've been wanting to kick-off a definite career for over a year and I finally got serious about it. I had a job offer to develop IS for a local government authority. In the short term it would pay more, but I'm thinking IS/IT isn't exactly the best place to work what with all the outsourcing.

Also, I really would like to own my own business one day and I reasoned that seeing how other businesses succeed/fail would be a good step. Of course, alot of people start their own businesses with little experience but I figure accountancy would make a great parachute for problems later in life. Also, I know this current business inside out from the manufacturing level and I think that will help.

When I graduated from uni, I'd been studying and doing exams for practically 11 years. I needed a break, and now I feel refreshed and ready to move up a gear. These last three years have been a bit of a sabbatical.

Besides, I couldn't see myself driving that Mitsu Evo without some kind of change in career. I've got the apartment with the remote control electric gates, but my car sucks ass. ;)

I couldn't live in the US. You drive on the wrong side of the road and your food is too cheap. I'd end up in a car accident or obese (I have to exercise enough as it is). :D
