Flew my first Solo today
« on: March 09, 2004, 02:00:40 PM »
After owning an ultralight trike for a year I decided to upgrade to a full PPL license. Today I flew my first solo flight. I have 20 hours on this type of plane and about 30 on my trike.

The plane was a Cessna 172, (I am too tall and heavy for a 150), I flew one circuit with 2 other planes in the circuit, and on final flew about 100' over a pair of really big Canada Geese. Luckily they did not panic and continued on their way.

The landing was smooth.

What a rush. I just wanted to keep flying all day and head off for a cross country trip.

BTW online flying really does make it easier to fly in real life.

WTG Habu,

A little nerve racking as you take position and hold lol.

First solo is one of the greatest moments you'll enjoy.

Keep up the good work!

Congrats on the solo.

FWIW, I have been told and seen this myself a couple of times. A bird will take evasive by diving. If you are getting close don't try to avoid it by going down, try to climb above.

Bird strikes are NOT a good thing in an airplane!

Congrats Habu!

The biggest difference I found between flying AH and a real plane when  I sat in the co-pilot's seat of a DeHavilland Dove on a pleasure flight was that when I turned the aircraft and then recentered the yoke and pedals, it kept on turning.

I had to turn the controls the other way to make the plane fly straight again.

Thankyou guys.

I will remember that advice Maverick. For those of you who do not know what a Canada Goose is picture a 12 lb turkey flying and you get an idea of its size. I am sure he would have destroyed the prop and gone through the windscreen if I hit one head on.

As it was they were flying the same direction as me but crossing over from left to right under my nose. As I was on mid final I had the throttle cut right back so I was not making a lot on noise. They seemed unpreturbed. I took it as a good omen that they were sharing their sky with me this morning.

Wow, congrats!

Man...I solo'd nearly 20 years ago...dang...where'd the time go

Yea, birds are bad.  One of the guys in our aero club dinged a seagull with the prop on short final.  Whatta mess.

Divebombing can be quite fun.  Except you aren't allowed to use real bombs anymore.  Instead use Soda cans or Beer cans.

But don't drink too much of the latter because you won't have any ammo for later on in the trip when you buzz some cops.
