My government class and I covered the topic of voter qualifications today, and one of the points made was that qualifications vary from state to state.

Which got me to thinking...if I could set voter qualifications that would apply across the board, in every state, what would those qualifications be? Would they involve...

Educational level (i.e., high school diploma, college degree, etc.)

Employment status

Mandatory community service

What requirements do you think citizens should meet before they are permitted to vote?

Be a real citizen.

Not be a convicted fellon.

Be able to read the ballot in english only.

I had an idea though. Offer a 150$ tax credit to vote. Offer another 50 if you can pass a civics test on how the government works.

why not felons (once their time is served and parole over)?
they work and live in the same county we do. their should have the same rights once their debt is paid.

my rules would be-
citizen (if imigrant 5 years of residence, after becoming a citizen)
over 18 years old

Veteran status, thats all. It shows responsability enough to vote.

This is laughable....

If this were the law then most of GWB's administration would be unable to vote.

I'd agree with all of these except I'd word the last one different:

Be able to read the ballot.

English not required since we're a big melting pot, but literacy is a must due to the democrats that feed off those who are minority and illiterate with the offer of motor voter and free cigarettes on chartered buses to voting stations.

felons can ask the governor of the state to restore their voting rights.

Hopefully your class discussed the 15th admendment and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that addresses discriminatory practices.

Many states resisted voter eligibility, trying to impose some of the requirements you suggest. The Voting Rights act was an attempt to close the creative loopholes states were using to disenfranchise certain segments of the population.

simple... All male citizens over the age of 21 who own property...

women and non property owners should be able to vote in special elections where no things that affect men or property rights are involved.

My opinion is that only those who have served the Government are allowed to vote. Be it military service, a clerk in some Office, or a janitor for the white house. 2 years at least.

laser... my idea makes more sense. Those who have "served" are simply more indoctrinated in most cases. they still have no stake in how things come out or can even imagine what life will be like when they get into the world.
