The race is underway!
« on: March 13, 2004, 09:34:55 AM »
I got up early this morning to track progress of the DARPA Grand Challenge, a robotic desert race across 150 miles.

http://www.grandchallenge.org/statusboard/

Two teams are already 7 miles along, but haven't made it past that.  I sure wish there was live streaming video I could watch!  I'm very curious abotu what has stopped them or if it's a reporting error.

I heard there's live coverage on The Paint Drying Channel.

I found streaming video, and it was cool.  Some of the robots (and we're talking fully autonomous cars, trucks, and ATVs) sprinted out of the starting gate and slammed into walls, some of them went a couple miles then flipped, another one based on a Humvee went off course and broke an axle, and so on.

My favorite team (the robot motorcycle) failed before it even launched, but the TerraMax team impressed me.  Their vehicle was a multi thousand pound all terrain vehicle that barreled out of the starting gate and headed off into the desert, narrowly avoiding the barriers and obstacles.

They all failed this year, but next time it might be different.

I'm not sure why you guys think this is boring, these are totally autonomous.  They aren't big R/C cars, they actually have to have enough smarts to coordinate radar, lidar, vison interpretation, sonar, etc.

It's unfortunate that each team failed so quickly.  The best was...what...7 of 150 miles or something like that?  :( :lol

O well.  Is it true that 1st prize would've been a million dollar contract?

I heard the giant chicken eating robot was doing well before the unfortunate turtle pee incident.

Software Quality Assurance Engineer.  Before switching to management, at least.  I'm still an engineer at heart.
