Cable or DSL??

Depends on what's available in your area.  In National Capital Area, Comcast does great for me:  max download speed 3.23 megabit/sec and max upload speed 224.04 kilobit/sec.

Speed test via YourSpeed v.2.3 on Internet.  Has throughputs of 704 Kbps and 88,023 Bytes per sec.   Cable is clear winner in our area, much faster than comparable phone max.

That's a bit slower than I get on my DSL connection Halo, but sounds pretty realistic, given the aggregate bandwidth available over the Internet.  Last mile starts becoming a non-issue once you get above about 1Mb/s as the Internet is the bottleneck then.

Comcast is our local cable too Halo.

Routing is somewhat controlled by the ISP.  It depends on the number of pipes and connections the ISP has.

Cable networks are laid out much like AOL, where they have Internet connections spread throughout the country and each WAN covers a large regional area.  It is not unusual to see 6 or 7 hops in a trace inside the cable network before reaching an Internet gateway router.
DSL providers tend to be more localized, except for the very large DSL providers, which use a network topology much like Cable.

Normally you will have fewer hops with DSL than Cable, but not always.  Again, the ISP is the key to that.

Downloads are sometimes misleading as they are probably coming from a caching applicance within the local ISP's network.

Cable or DSL??

I'm damn happy with my cable.  depending on which benchmark site I goto I'm getting between 2.5-3.9 down.

IMO you might want to take your neigborhood into account when deciding.  very few people in my imediate area are online and almost all of them are on dial-up, of the people I know (and the ones those talk to) I'm the only one around on cable, 1 or 2 others have dsl.  the bulk of the computer owners around here don't even have net access.

the end result is I never seem to take a hit from excessive traffic.
down time is much less than with dsl (4 hours in 2 years with cable, 2-3 hours a month with dsl), the cable is as much faster than the dsl as the dsl was faster than the 56k.

I guess we're just lucky around here with comcast, I know a few others who have it in other parts of town and other parts of the state and all seem to be having simular results as me.

one thing that worries me is they will soon be offering cable phones at a cheaper rate than regular land lines.  if that catches on I suspect my speed will take a hit then

This is with Comcast in Michigan. I had DSL it was nice but 1/3 as fast and ping times were 3 times what I have now, which is normal at 29ms to AH. Price was the same for either one.
