Wiretapped Broadband

My brother-in-law said he'd rather a nuke go off in DC(he lives in metro area) than live in a police state. My belief that he's a moron was somewhat galvanized, hearing that statement.

But is a police state where we're heading, or where we already are?

Here's a recent article I found somewhat disturbing:

FBI proposal concerning Broadband providers

Oh sweet Jesus, what is this thread, miko bait?

With a brother-in-law like that, I bet you wish your sister had been a lesbian?

I agree with you there, cobra, but there's gotta be a line somewhere, right? We've got payphones here in the metro area that are marked as tapped right on the handset. This does not bother me at all. In fact, I'm still pretty far from being bothered by any of this. It's what the future holds that's questionable.

allowing taps on systems and having to reconfigure your system to facilitate this are completely different issues.

a wire-tap with cause is ok (and in the case of certain payphones, they are generally ones that have been used for drug trafficing.  so while they may not have probable cause to listen to each person, the argument could be made that they have probable cause for the phone).

but forcing you to set up a system for easy snooping is just too damn much.  it's like requiring you to build peep-holes into your house, so that if they feel the need to check up on you they can do it easily.

If someone is going to invade my privacy, or violate my rights, I'd prefer it was as difficult and costly for them as possible.

This is nothing new. They've been doing things like this for at least 9 years that I know of. FBI came into the data center where I used to work and set up a carnivore box in plain sight. The only new spin on this is that they're trying to set it up so that they don't have to leave their office to "tap" in.
