And the RAF stole it from one of the Bf110 ZG units around the time of the Battle of Britain :)

Not quite steal since the USAAF simply reclaimed RAF aircraft for the use by AVG.  They were actually 'RAF' serial marked a/c!

Uhhhm no way on both counts. The flying tigers got their markings from Bf110s  they saw in magazines of the time.

Here it is straight from the horses (sharks) mouth... :)

A member of the third squadron, Erik Shilling ended up creating the insignia that would forever be linked with the Flying Tigers. "It's always been said that the tiger mouth came about after we saw a picture of a P-40 being flown by 112 Squadron in North Africa," Shilling told me in his final interview.  "That's not true.  I was looking through a British magazine one day and saw a photo of a Me-110 with a shark face on it.  They were from the 'Haifisch Gruppe.'  I thought it looked perfect for our squadron insignia."  Shilling chalked a sharkmouth on his P-40 to see how it might look; when he asked Chennault for permission to use it as a squadron marking, Chennault saw it as the group marking.  Shilling ended up chalking the sharkmouth on all of the P-40s at Tongou before they were painted.  "That's why there were no two of them with the same mouth."

Obviously we've got different quotes.  Interesting though, will try and find other sources, but this is the main source I have.

There were examples of the US recalling loaned Lend-Lease equipment, one being when the USAAF took over some of the P40s delivered to the RAF for use in North Africa (with shark mouth markings). ....

36 were diverted to China for use by the AVG.  Britain released a total of 100 Tomahawks to the AVG which adopted the famous shark's teeth nose emblem originating with the RAF which used the markings on its Tomahawks in North Africa.

I'm sure Furball can find out more about the P40 in the piccy he took, he works at the RAF museum so hope he can find more gen out.
