George Carlin Responds to Indecency Uproar
« on: March 13, 2004, 12:36:17 PM »
By ANTHONY BREZNICAN, AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES - George Carlin famously dissected "The Seven Words You Can't Say on Television" as a way to explore what everyone was so uptight about. Thirty-two years later the same debate is still raging, now fueled by Janet Jackson's Super Bowl flash, the suspension of Howard Stern's raunchy radio show from six stations and new House legislation that would raise a performer's indecency fine from $11,000 to $500,000.
So what does the 66-year-old Carlin think of the current hand wringing over what is indecent, profane, obscene, immoral, lewd or insulting?

"More of the same, same old bulls**t. What are we, surprised?" Carlin told The Associated Press on Friday. He blamed it on religious moralism, media commercialism and election-year politics.

"The whole f*****g problem with this g**d*** idea of obscenity and indecency, and all of these things, f*****g bad language and whatever, it's all caused by one basic thing, and that is: mother f*****g religious superstition. ... There's an idea that the f*****g human body is somehow evil and bad and there are parts of it that are especially evil and bad, and we should be ashamed.

S**t… fear, guilt and shame are built into the attitude toward sex and the body. ... It's reflected in these f*****g prohibitions and these taboos that we have."

Mix that with TV or radio, and you've got a problem, he said. "S**t, what I always remind people is, radio and television and  as it happens now the mother f*****g newspapers and magazines too, are advertising media. ... When you have commercialism involved you have the kind of fear that p***y advertisers are very afraid of offending some bull***t potential customer.

They don't want to lose a sale. So they have this need to inspect and clean up and watch the f*****g content in order not to hurt their own sales. It's based on success at the cash register. "And yet, these d**ks are very inconsistent; on that Super Bowl broadcast of Janet Jackson's there was also a commercial about a 4-hour erection.

A lot of people were saying about that 'How do I explain this c***s**king bulls**t to my kids? We're a little family, we watched it together and that c*** Janet Jackson flashes her right t*t to my innocent 5 years old!' …These are convenient targets."

While I was in my teens to early 30's (yeah, a wide spread about 27 years ago) I felt the need to use all the "F" and "S" words I could so I would be heard and thought of as a man.

I finally realized how ignorant and imature it made me sound so I readjusted my vocabulary. Though brought up as a Baptist that wasn't the reason for the change. I don't see how speaking of fornicating and defacating every other word adds to content or comunication in speech (or the written word either for that matter).

What's the point?

I have found though that personal "presence" seems to add much more. People have a tendency to listen and take what you say at face value with the proper "presence".

"Presence" is a lot harder in the written word though, I need to work on that one,  but the proper body language will almost always give you a bit of an edge.

My two cents worth :)

Heya Mark,

I agree w/ you for the most part. To me, people that use profanity gratuitously appear uneducated. There’s a couple of places however, we might disagree.

I’ve seen Platoon and Casino on the USA channel. They went ahead and taken the profanity out. Normally I wouldn’t object but the profanity in these two films are part of the art. In Casino, the character Nicky doesn’t care what other people think. He could care less if old ladies are offended by his language. He’s a gangster. In the theatrical release, he spits out the F word.. highlighting each syllable, it’s part of his persona.  In Platoon we are taken into the world of the Viet Nam G.I. A bizarre upside down world the third rung from Hell itself. The audience is supposed to be shocked. I think by editing the filmmaker lost some of the impact he was trying to create.
An ironic sidenote the film “Gangs of New York” the character Bill Cuttler spews out a dirabe of profanity in front of the stunned mayor.. Only problem is it’s 19th and 18th century cussing.. heh.. I wonder how they plan to treat that when it comes to television.

Lets see... :)

"There are 400,000 words in the English language and there are 7
of them you can't say on television. What a ratio that is.
399,993 to 7. They must really be bad. They'd have to be outrageous
to be seperated from a group that large. All of you over here, you 7,
Bad Words. That's what they told us they were, remember?
"That's a bad word!" No bad words, bad thoughts, bad intentions,
and words. You know the 7, don't you, that you can't say on television?
"****, Piss, ****, ****, noodlesucker, Mother****er, and Tits"
Those are the heavy seven. Those are the ones that'll infect your soul,
curve your spine, and keep the country from winning the war.
"****, Piss, ****, ****, noodlesucker, Mother****er, and Tits"
Wow! ..."

What's strange is that George Carlin has 399,993 words he can use to be funny, But he is helpless without those seven.

Sad really.

I used to love to watch Red Skelton. His show was absolutely hilarious. He could create more comedy without ANY words than Carlin could using his entire vocabulary. Skelton never had to use profanity to be funy. He never needed that crutch that so many latter day commedians need.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

skeleton is a different kind of comedy. people use that kind of comedy today. In church talent shows.

If you dont like what you see on tv. Turn it off.

Carlins a P***Y
I remember a 10 minute Oration I gave on squad channel that wouldve had him covering his ears in shame. Touching such subjects as Reggies Mitchells mothers morals to the use of Phalanxs in anceint combat.
Bis endlich der Fiend am Boden liegt.
Bis Bishland bis Bishland bis Bishland wird besiegt!

The term "ten minute oration" itself is suspect.
