Axis & Allies
« on: March 15, 2004, 03:02:21 PM »
Someone mentioned the board game Axis & Allies awhile back. They said it would it would be kewl if you could play it online. I thought they stopped hosting it at MSN's gaming zone, but they still have it. You can use the A&A lobby or play through the directplay lobbies. You need to buy the CD and go from there.

There is a dice hack out there so beware, it's best to play with people you know.

I have Panzer General 2 also, and this can be played through the directplay lobbies also.

I stilll have my board game version in the closet, but I am missing the card for Japan that shows where all the starting units go.  I need to see if I can replace that somehow.  I had a CD version of the game a while back also but I dont play it anymore.

A dice hack? Even "board games" now? Geez. Some people just can't stand to lose it seems. Makes me wonder what they really enjoy about the game. Oh yeah .... guess it's not really about the game to them.

p.s. I'm an A&A player from way back. Got the pc version.

Same here Arlo, it was a quasi-religion on my ship back in the late-80's.  And, yes, some of those guys took it wayyyyyyyy too seriously.

I have it on CD also. There was a patch put out a while back that improved it a good bit. So if you're just installing it, do yourself a favor and do a search for the patch. I think it's version .31

Didn't start playing A&A until after my Navy days. Never saw it on the shelves until after 87. Probably didn't make it this way until then. I remember thinking as far back as then that it would be cool if the game was converted to a pc version to cut down the time it took to set up and put up.

I also remember us coming up with all sorts of optional rules. Additional tech advances such as: advanced sonar (negates sub first shot/kill rule); "super" tanks (+1 def); successful espionage (randomly aquire one technology from you enemy - if enemy has no technology, successful sabotage - randomly destroy one enemy unit), etc (cant remember the rest). Even making pieces for destroyers, cruisers, paratroop transport planes, paratroops, field artillery, etc.

It hit the shelves as I recall sometime in '86.  This I remember because I was still in High School when it came out.  I immediately bought it.  Thought I'd have friends who would like to play it.  Found out they didn't want to.  So guess what...I played the game against myself.  That's the definition of futile.

We did the creative bit as well with new rules and pieces.  Some of the original rules I thought were quite bogus.  As a defender I thought you should be able to aim and hit an attacker's target of choice rather than let the attacker decide what gets removed from the board.  We bought Axis & Allies: Pacific Theater and felt that it sucked anatomical spheres of major porportions.

Yeah, I first got a computer in January of 1999, and I started playing A&A at the MSN gaming zone. I got into a game and on Germany's first move, he gets 3 development weapons and is still able to spend all his money. I said, "how the hell did you do that??" He bolts the game and I return to the lobby and post what happened. He denies it and no one believed me. I got a private message from someone who asked me some questions on what happened, and he seemed to believe me but I didn't save the game so I couldn't prove it. I found the game in my desk about 6 months ago and started searching for some sites, and that's were I found out about the hack. It was at a site that was devoted to A&A online, spring1942 or something like that.
I haven't played the board game in years, we all have families and it's hard to find the time and get together. With the CD you can play online and you can save the game.
The link I provided takes you to the MSN gaming zone, if you sign up and log in, go to the A&A lobby, there was 39 people in there last night. You just join a game or create your own. I haven't set my game up on XP yet, i'm told there is a dx .dll file you need to copy and paste into your game folder(there is also a patch, but that is different from the file you have to copy).

Found this site too http://www.axisandallies.net/index.html
And this will get you updated to play online http://home.centurytel.net/khb/aa/

Still have the box, my wife has been wondering about when I will
remove it from the premises after 16 years, even looks brand new... Many drunk nights till 6:00am spent with the sound of:
"Rattle rattle rattle crash...." followed by "aaaarrrrrgggghhhhhhh"
when the dice finally settled down...
The new version of axis and allies "2" releases look pretty good
but I dont remember there names..
As the A and A group grew up it is harder to get togethor and do it cause the wifes always complain we get to drunk and stayup until the next day like we were in college again...
We had started playing A and A back in the late 70's I recall but at least it was 1980 when we purchased it.
The cdrom version just isn't the same as drinking with the pals on a saturday night and conquering cardboard with plastic and ivory, and the sounds of screaming and yelling and beer cans crashing was sure to drive the wifes to another state for the night..

Sniff...Sniff... Memories....

This has a file that has the 1.33 patch and brings the game up to date with dx drivers http://home.centurytel.net/khb/aa/
This has a shareware dice roller that works with game(dice in game can and have been hacked), most people who play online use this now. http://www.balance-of-power.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=002638 change name of file b4 you install diceme, then reboot.
This one has the uninstall http://www.balance-of-power.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=002648

You can find people to play with here http://zone.msn.com/en/root/cdclassic.htm
