P51-b...Mo' Flaps?
« on: March 19, 2004, 12:18:37 PM »
Anybody else have a problem with the 51 B(yotch) flipping over in lower speed turn battles? I usually drop a notch of flaps when I get slow, should I be using more? I think it has more of an inclination to flip to the right, can manual trim settings help out? Why does it do this, because of the heavier armor?

I'm trying to get the hang of it and have had some fun fights so far, but I've augered that thing so many times it's unbelieveable. It seems like I don't even get much warning, just all the sudden Flip! Auger! Tower! "Dweeb1 killed you"

It's called an "accelerated stall", and deploying more flaps only means that you'll snap-spin at a lower speed. Spend some time in the TA working on flying at the edge of stall until you develop a feel for it.

Sounds like your're yanking on the stick...the slower you are the more gentle on contoll input u must be...more than 2 notches of flaps in a turn fite is not recommended in the Mustang..however if you get really slow(verticle yo-yo) full flaps will delay the onset of a stall.

Also, check to make sure that your stick isn't spiking. Spikey sticks kept me out of the knife fiting business for near a year and a half:)

When your in a turn-fight in a P51B, consider the fight already lost.

Keep your speed over 250mph, and do not turn more than 45 degrees for a firing solution.

If you do have to get low and slow, dont turn so hard that you hear the stall buzzer.  The 51 doesnt accelerate very well, so don't blow your speed when enemy aircrafts are nearby.

Heres the planes that the 51B can effectively turn fight:

190A8
190D9
P47 series
P51D
C47
109g
Mosquito
F4U-1,1D,1C

DA DA DA DA

THen go to the DA and fly it some more;)

Yup, compared to the 51D, the B I have found to have a much rougher snap roll than the D at low speeds.

TA works but blah...

If you ever want to go to the DA to practice some low and slow skin of your teeth 51 flying gimme a shout KJ714
and good luck;)
