Hyas just to give some a little impression on just how BIG that formation of Buffs was:

I was flying in the lead section on the right hand wing.

Dunno about the framerate problem mentioned, it was smooth for me. I have  nice short film that starts just after Redstar call bandits. Includes a nice piece where I light up a 109 and Wil  engages. ( I actually hold fire even with a nice snap shot to watch the kill)It is a good seat.

A nice finishing touch is I spin into the ground in that awful P-51! Where's me 205?!MAn that bugger can't turn.

I think these things are quite alot of fun, and it was really cool to see Fatty and Wil and others on your same side rather than fighting them.

Anyway, want the film, e-mail me or respond with how to post it for download. I have a server but not sure of FTP.

Peace,

Creamo

I put this posting in a thread over in the SE Forum, but I'll put it here, too:

For those without P-51 film, I posted my zipped film (it's still 850K) at http://dragon-isle.net/kwilhite/flight_sims/SE_Large.zip

I did not tape the entire flight starting at launch, so it's not as bad as it could be.

The action starts at about the time we cross over from 11,10 to 11,11. As you'll see, RedStar had us turning all over the place to stay with the bombers, and not outrun them.

During the mission, a group of us in P-51's on RW together drifted back to fly behind the main group and the bombers. It was agreed that I would trail my wingman (I was winging for Tern) by 2K to follow and protect his six. As we dropped back I fell a little behind, but as I was looking directly at him he exploded in a ball of fire! We were confused and talking on RW, and he also typed on the open channel "what happened?" since there wasn't an enemy near him. The interesting thing is that when you watch the film, he doesn't explode, and his icon stays on film, even after you see his comments appear in the text buffer, and see me turning my plane to try and spot the enemy fighters shooting at us (boy, was I confused!).

Since it doesn't show my wingman exploding, and his icon stays on the film, possibly there are packets that tell the FE to do an explosion and not display the plane/icon that is still being smoothed/propagated by the FE, but are not properly handled by the film recorder?  You will see Tern's comments appear in the text buffer, which were shortly after he exploded. You will also see other planes smoking and going down, some without obvious enemy icons attacking them ...

Please, no harsh comments on my poor performance.    I was a very confused rookie P-51 pilot, learning rudder pedals (DoA doesn't handle the USB pedals, so I have not used them much). Anyway, after the initial confusion, and hearing that the bombers were in trouble, I abandoned trying to go after bandits and was shot down heading back to the B-17s ... but I had a blast!  The views were awesome!

<Salute!> to the organizers, a job well done!

Gator, since I was involved in that particular situation, I watched your film, interested if you could see me or not from your POV.

I had time only to watch the film once today before work. I watched your plane from external side view so I could not see my plane coming from behind until too late. Your plane was shot, but my plane had gears down - something only freshly rendered planes in films have.

I stopped the film there and rolled it back, and now I payed attention to your 6 view. My plane could now be seen coming from behind at d40 or so.

So, it would be best to watch that film only once after loading it, and see if it proves 'invisible' LW planes in that scenario.  Was it at d40 as in later replays, or was it inside guns range when my plane showed up ?

Here's how it looked for me:

Kirin and I were 109 scouts that spotted Allied formation. Escorts could clearly be seen at 33k and some still climbing, while bombers were lower. We passed the formation not entering icon range to make sure if there wasn't another formation behind. After that we turned and followed you. I noticed stragglers below me, all P 51s, 1 La 5 and N1K2. The bombers were primary target so we did not engage the low fighters.

Then I saw your P 51 flying in front of me, d40 or so. You seemed not to have seen me, I almost rammed you there   Same thing 20 seconds later, another P 51 (SEPPL) did not see me, so I shot him down. Only my pings made him roll over, but it was too late for him.

After coming home from work, I watched it carefull this time. My plane materialized inside guns range behind Gator’s P 51 ! You can see this only if you watch the film for the first time after loading it. In replays it shows at d40 or so behind. Also, SEPPL’s P 51 cannot be seen at all, even though it flew in front of Gator. I shot it 20 seconds later, again, pilot probably did not see me (evasives only after pings).

This film proves what happened in that scenario with Luftwaffe Klingon birds. Kirin’s plane was some d30-40 to my left, but it can’t be seen at all in that film.

Other P 51 escorts were warning others about 2 109s (us) approaching from behind, but it seems some people could not see us.

Here’s my view:

film

I don’t think there were 32 planes inside icon range there.

Hristo, I believe you are correct about only the first time through showing the planes that were visible.  I rewound the film, and it does appear that maybe the 32 planes (or whatever the # is) that were the ones that were selected to be visible by the FE when the film was stopped are still the ones visible after rewinding ... or something like that.

I was pretty confused with all the activity and only seeing a few enemy, so I didn't know but maybe it was my lack of SA that got me shot down, but looking at the film I don't know but that I probably shouldn't blame my SA too much.

This was an enjoyable scenario for me, but a couple of the things I learned from this first scenario is to lock out the "gate crashers", and try to break up the engagements to eliminate the "invisible" planes.
