Tiger invincibility?
« on: March 21, 2004, 06:20:38 PM »
Over the past few days I've been really getting into Il2's and attacking GV's.  I can pop pretty much all gvs with a single 100lb easily.  However, I can't even scratch a tiger.  Even if the bomb literally hits the tank.  Even on multiple passes.

Is this at all realistic?

I hit a Tiger with a 500lb bomb (got a hit sprite) and didn't kill it or damage it.  The other 500lb bomb that dropped at the same time (well, .05 seconds before or after) exploded on the ground, so I'm pretty sure the bombs both had time to arm.

fyi, euro planes', like the il2, ord is measured in kilograms.  just multiply the # of kilos by 2.2 to convert into lbs.

as far as what's realistic regarding a tiger being popped with a bomb, i don't know.

No vehicle can withstand a 1000lb bomb hit.

No vehicle should be able to withstand a direct 500lb hit either, but the Tiger I does as modeled in AH.

wouldn't the shockwave from a near miss with a 100lb be enough to mush the crew?

If you're in the il2 just use the 23mm cannons instead, they pop tigers rather nicely.

Should I be approaching from a certain angle?  Also, how many rounds is normal?

I used about 5 100kg'ers, 4 rockets on one tiger, then 200 23mm's.  I would have used the left, but with the 5 minutes attacking this single GV, someone came up and shot me down.

I've heard people talk about a 90 degree attack run, where .50 cals can take out a tank. I've never done it myself, however...

EVERY TIME I've picked up a Tiger, I've been destroyed with the very first hit, even from a single rocket.

LOL I've seen lancs lay a path of 1000 lb. bombs over a tiger and it live.  Also been in p38, drop 2 1000lb. bombs on top of the tiger, look back and it is sitting in my craters shooting at folks =)  Kinda not realistic =)

I hit a tiger from ~800 in the rear facing with a PZ 75mm ap at least 25 times before it popped. I'd already hit it 5 times at longer range to pop turret...others hit it repeatedly as it tried to get to supplies or RTB...all in all it was hit more than 50 times before it went....total garbage as far as I'm concerned...and yes I have film.

Well, GV to GV may be different.  I have heard historical accounts of tigers sustaining 200+ shots from russian tanks at close range and still making it home.  But I know exactly what you mean, I've gone tiger vs. tiger, hit the guy in the rear 20+ times, popped his engine on the first shot, but the following shots seemed to do nothing.  I probably could've unloaded everything into him and he would still be sitting there if he hadn't got ganged by some panzers heading out to his spawn point.  Food for thought, I will say that reevaluation of the GV model may not be a bad idea if there were time.

laser next time in an il2 and see a tiger i'll film it for you.  When attacking a tiger i attack from the side at a steep angle.  Not quite 90 degrees but steep.  I don't open fire til about 300yrds and it usually does the job. On the first pass the tiger's turret or engine will usually be disabled, though on occasions a tiger has died with 1 pass.    It will usually take about 3 passes to get a kill.

I never use bombs because the il2 climbs so badly.  I only ever use rockets on m16's or osties firing from about 1.4k away with a salvo of 4 with a delay of 0.25.  I generally stay away from these as they usually mean death for the il2.
