Howdy, LtMagee!

I saw your roster page last night which it really impressed to active Marines Fighting Squadron 312 or VMF-312.  I was VMF-312 "Checkerboarders" CO in Head-to-Head before I pay subscribe to enter Main Area and I disbanded the squadron to joined up with VF-17 Jolly Rogers.  I had 10 members in VMF-312 and it was not enough them to go 8 room in H2H.

I know alot history about VMF-312 Checkerboarders in World War II and also Korean War as VMA-312.  They fly SNJ-4, F4U-1s, and FG-1s in World War II and then later in Korean War, they flew F7F Tigercat and F4U-4 Corsair, F9F-4 Panther, FJ-2 Fury, and FJ-3 Fury.  Today, VMFA-312 are still active and flying the F/A-18 Hornet.

Thanks Rafe.
I know that they were late in the war but still saw harsh battles at Okinawa late 44 and into 45.
I need a good photo of the original patch with the Bulldog with satin wings!

BTW Lt Magee flew with VMF-214. He is the one that opened his canopy and threw a granade on a boat!!!!!

Howdy,

I have email one person who was a Vet in WWII and served with VMF-312 on Okinawa in 1945.  He's name is Corporal Al Meadows and served with US Marine Corps in 1943 thur 1946.  After I email him last year for how did  Major Richard M. Day (CO) was Killed in Action and here what he wrote me:

I served with VMF 312 on Okinawa where and when Major Day was KIA.  He was leading a rocket attack on some area of Kyushu and his plane was hit by anti aircraft fire on the second run.  His plane, with him, crashed into the sea.

Al Meadows, Corporal USMC 1943-1946.

I was impressed what he wrote me that email in June 30, 2003 and I wrote him couple more about VMF-312 in WWII.  I have try to email him couple times, but often never reply to me and he's pretty much old right now.

Yup, He got that right answer and 1st Lt. Christopher L. Magee had 9 kills in WWII.

Chris Magee, raised on Chicago's South Side, had the heart of an adventurer.  When war came to Europe in 1939, he and a friend headed to New Orleans and walked the docks for a month as tehy tried to book passage on any ship sailing twoard the confilct.  Stumped by neutrality laws, they reluctantly went home to Chicago, but Magee soon headed for Canada with high hopes of flying in the RCAF or Royal Cananda Air Force.  Chris was almost finised with training on Prince Edward Island when Navy recruiter arrived from the States and offered him a deal as fight pilot.

Chris's logbook showed almost four hundred flight hours, including fifty-six in Corsairs since his arrival on Esiritu.
