Impersonating a player
« on: March 25, 2004, 03:39:51 AM »
What is the policy on this?  Is it OK to steal someone's BBS handle and then use it in the game as a call sign to impersonate another player?

I wonder because loitering over a Rookie field, I shot down this bf109 and to my surprise I see on the system message that I just shot down AckAck.

Those that have known me since I first started flying online combat sims, have known me by the handle Ack-Ack and call sign AKAK.  From AW to WB to AH, I've been Ack-Ack/AKAK and now some twit comes along and steals my handle for his call sign.  That's just really, really lame.

Perhaps that's always been their call sign also.

Too bad none of the wit the British are known for was passed along to you.  Otherwise, you'd be funny once in awhile.

thought this post was from the impersonator.. Typed about a paragraph of smack, re-evaluated the post and realized it was infact the real AKAK heh. Well it is pretty lame. Maybe we can vote him away or something, worked for night, why not handle stealing b1tches.

Ack Ack is a pretty common term in the AirForce.  Maybe this guy picked it up there.

So the guy subscribes never ever played the game before, all excited about his first online Air combat game, picks a real cool callsign, then procedes to get villified on the BBS over his choice of call sign... Welcome to Aceshigh newb, this is how we treat new members of the community lol....
Wouldn't it be easier to just private message him and ask him to change his callsign rather than the conspiracy theory route...
I haven't seen a list during signup that showed existing used callsigns, its just a blank field that gives little directions on what you should type in the blank for a callsign...

Then again, how do we know that the post here from Ack-Ack isn't someone pretending to be the real UBB Ack-Ack, complaining about a Main Arena Ack-Ack imposter?

Kidding aside, if it was plagarism, it's lame. Copyright the name and demand royalties :D

Look at the stats.  The guy's obviously a noob.  This is his first tour, he's got 3.5 hours logged.

...I picked mine at random ...heard some hip-hop and chose ADogg Little did i know there were many Dogg's in this hood.

ADoggs, Adogg21st, Deaddog, etc... but I'm glad  I didn't pick my usual handle Nphorcer - there's already an EN4CER - I can't tell you how irritating it is getting shot down by that poser :D

Basically You are You and You know it. Unless the sign up system gets rid of similar call signs somehow that's just the way things gotta be.

Ack-Ack we know who you are and don't worry we'll still trash you with the same love and affection as always despite your irksome twin.

I would think that if you are well known, those that know you
know the difference between AKAK and ACKACK, ACK_ACK,AK-AK
AK-47, and will not be confused or misled that this person is you.
those that don't know you, well who gives a *#%@ anyhow, its
not like there going to the bank to cash your checks.

In order to play the game you have to pick an ID. You don't see
all the other ID's until you play the game and everybody is not
online all the time so you might not realize that someone has a
similar ID for some time. I am sure many people pick a ID accidently that is similar (but not exact). I know I did when I started in Air Warrior years ago. I have seen so many variations
of the ID I chose I cannot count, but since I only have the exact
ID reserved and realize that many people are going to imagine
themselves up the same name, I quit worrying about it. When I
finally added my squad identifyer to the front of my ID recently,
I can know that nobody will mistake me for one of my counter-parts.
