Just had my car broken in
« on: March 25, 2004, 07:08:31 AM »
Well they stole the radio, broke the AC nobs and left them on HOT ( i live in Miami, nice 89 degree's outside) Stole everything from my glovebox which was mostly information (which is what I am most worried about)

They may have my bank account information so I took the money and transfered it out, which was all accounted for this morning. Car insurance, and Registration.

My question is, the robber seems to have cut himself breaking in and there is blood in my car (plenty of), as well as a set of keys with a membership card to Winn-Dixie, as well as a large footprint in the sand by the door which they broke into, will the Police be able to do anything with this? Or is this just a minor thing in their book, and won't bother?

I know I know... I've been watching to much CSI... but hey maybe he's done something else in the past worth checking?

Definately file a police report. They'll make the determination whether or not to gather any evidence.  Was your Social Security number anywhere within that information? If so, you might want to find out what to do in case of identity theft.

Sorry to hear about your dilemma, Blck.

Thanks Rip.

Well the officer said, all they can do at this moment is file a report. She also said that if I want to have fingerprints done I can setup an appointment then take it down to the station. The blood they won't do any work on unless it was an armed robery, or homicide that took place, because doing DNA testing is an expensive process.

It was my daily ride they broke into, and whats odd is this area is not very prone to crime, except for the last week there was a Home invasion just down the block and now this. We average maybe 1 house burglary every 10 years or so. Don't know if thats a good average, but it has been a while since, anything has happened.

I'm gonna cruise the neighboorhood at night, and find these little punks, I know these bastards live near here. Hopefully they don't call the cops on me for cruising the neighboorhood.

Mine was broken into last year.  The crazy part is, they broke into over twenty cars that night in the neighborhood.  Took the cops 2 hours to get to my house because they were busy taking reports all morning.  Ironicaly, I had accidently left my passenger door unlocked and my car was one of the few that didnt have a broken window.

Sorry to hear about that

I leave both my cars unlocked (well, how do you lock a Healey roadster?) and neither one has a radio.

I hate replacing glass.

Tinted windows are a pain to try and smash through to get inside.

Oh, by the way, you can make your own plaster cast of the footprint and use Q-tips to keep blood samples (store each q-tip in its own testube).  If its no charge to you, let'em take fingerprints.  Who knows, the perp probably already has a record and your evidence could take'em down.

It seems to me that it would only about 10 minutes for investigators to drive to Winn-Dixie and find out the membership info regarding the card.

Better yet, they could probably tell the last time the card was used and have video of the transaction.

If you live in a large city I'm afraid Police involvment will end with the report.  It just happens too often for them to investigate a case like this.

I sorry to hear this.....    Good luck..

Otto is most likely right.  However if there was a home invasion last week, and your car break-in this week, they may take more of an interest if the crimes in your area continue.  I would go ahead and get the fingerprints done.

A year or so ago my Jeep was broken into. Took the stereo and cd changer. Tore the dash up in the process. Went through the glove box and console. Left my big mag light, insurance and reg papers. I don't keep any other papers in the car just for such purposes. Before they broke in, they took a big light bulb out of the roof of the parking spot and threw it over the fence. Left visible fingerprints. Were in there long enough to go through everything, and... I was almost positive of who it was. When I called it in to report it, the police basically said "That's nice. Here is your report #."
Took four months for the insurance people to get their crap together and get it replaced and repaired. On the up side, I'd taken the CD caddy out when I got home so I could change a few out. At least I didn't lose some hard to find CDs.

Few weeks after the stereo, someone  snagged my mountain bike. Left my former room mate's, but it was a $50.00 Walmart special. Mine was a $300.00+ Bianchi. It had been a gift some years back so I had no reciept to use for insurance.
I didn't even bother to report it as I knew what they'd say.

Few days after that I was on my way to the gym. Passed a parked patrol car with an officer that looked like he might have been doing paper work. When I was on my way back home almost  two hours later he was still sitting there with his head forward and the interior light off. I called the substation and reported him asleep.

I have zero respect for the local police since then. The last city I lived in had a great police force.

If you're going to file an insurance claim you'll most likely need a report #, but I wouldn't count on getting anything beyond that from the police.

Always fill out a police report.  While police may not investigate your missing car stereo, they may find it in a bigger bust.  You never know where your stuff might turn up.

Two Charged After Downtown Raid

POSTED: 4:10 pm EST March 19, 2004
UPDATED: 4:11 pm EST March 19, 2004

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Columbus police said they found stolen items Thursday night in a raid of a downtown warehouse. The items allegedly were part of a large theft ring, NewsChannel 4's Natalie Walston reported.

Police sifted through the evidence Friday, and said they found a hot tub, an all-terrain vehicle, band equipment, drugs and weapons in the former Lazarus warehouse off of Whittier Street.

Police said two leaders of an alleged theft ring were arrested, and officers were searching for a third. Rammey Darwish, 30, was charged with receiving stolen property. Michael Bartley, 27, was charged with narcotics violations and possession of marijuana.

According to police, the items likely totaled more than $100,000 in value.

"There's going to be a lot of cleared-up burglary reports and theft-from-auto reports," Sgt. Craig Lee said. "Everything in there, we've been told, is basically stolen."

Police said they found band equipment, including a mixing board and amplifiers.

"There's a full stage set up with amplifiers," Lee said. "There's cable all over the place."

The weapons found include shotguns, handguns and possibly a rifle, Walston reported.

"We have a quantity of marijuana, also ... more than just personal use," Lee said.

Anyone with questions about the allegedly stolen items should contact Columbus police.

Please file a report, even if your report isn't immediately followed up on the information provided can be invaluable for spotting crime trends and assisting detectives and patrol officers in targeting areas/criminals. I'm sorry you have to make an appointment for prints. Here in Reno, every officer is equipped to lift fingerprints or is able to get someone who can. Processing of evidence for DNA is not restricted to violent crimes either. My partner and I just submitted a ballcap for DNA in an attempt to identify a suspect in a major internet fraud scam.
