I flew the Ju-88 for the first time as a "land" bomber last night. The only time I'd flown it previously was to try and torpedo a CV group. Man, can a formation of those devistate a town! I carried the 4-500k externals and the 10-25k internals. I dropped the externals first and then the internals(had the bomb bay open before first drop). It just cut a path straight through the town! It looked like a tornado went through there. Anyway, I plan on using it more often as a land based bomber. On the way back to base, I was jumped by 4 figs and killed two and smoked another before dying. I thought the guns on the Ju-88 were crap, but I guess they can shoot down stuff after all.

:aok :aok

It was fun!

:D

P.S. It's pretty fast for a buff too.

I like the "Junky 88" too :)
One just has to be careful not to fly into dense fighter covers...
the 7.92mm CAN take down planes, but they need quite a lot of hits and/or luck.
Bombload is actually higher than on a B17, it carries about 6620lbs vs. 6000.
It's ceiling is dangerously low though.
It can divebomb too (got divebrakes).

Yes it gets above 20k, but above 16 or so k it climbs really slowly.

The best bomber to hit strat targets with (other than the HQ) is the Ki-67.  Eight 100kg bombs from three bombers at a delay of .25, speed 340mph and 22,000ft totals the half of the town hit almost as well as a flight of Lancs, and Ki-67s can probably run  three or four sorties in the time it takes a Lanc to run one.

Did I mention it has guns?

the ju88 has a fuel consumption issue. Of all the bombers it has the shortest range. Hopefully this will be addressed in AH2.

You sure about the fuel?
I always had the feeling that the BostonIII runs dry after a couple of sectors, earlier than the others.

Last night I met a guy who shot down a JU-88 with a 50 cal. mg, from a foxhole during the Battle of the Bulge.

My bet is either "Lance McClintok" or "Wedge Masters".
Well seriously, it is possible to kill a diving Ju with a 50cal. Very difficult task though on a pintle mount, and requires a good amount of luck.

Absolutely more believable than the story I heard once of an old british guy who claimed to have shot down a Stuka with his Tommygun.
Prolly got shot down by something else in the same time he fired his submachinegun.

If speedy town killing is what you want, a Me-110, Jug or other heavy jabo can destroy a town faster than any bomber.   The best town smasher is the A-20G.   A few passes and the town is gone.

Yes, but that is a town, not a strat target.  Strat targets are much too big for any single jabo to match any bomber group's destructive capability.

In the context of hitting base towns I agree than a heavy jabo is the way to go.
