Raghead is not okay...
er, check? Why?
Actually, Rip, in some cases, they're all okay... For example, is it bad for a person to self-apply the term redneck? Or for two buddies calling each other rednecks... Same goes for Wetback and, as demonstrated liberally by the Hip-Hop industry, the 'N' word. Whether you or I think it's okay or not is irrelevant. Only the opinion of the guy being called whatever he's being called can decide that. Chances are, most persians will not like being called Raghead by a non persian, just like most Mexicans will not appreciate wetback from a non-mexican. It's a double standard that we all have to live with, because there's a derogatory/colloquial term for every group of people. Quite often, people outside the group to which the term applies will step in and attack its use as racist... I'm not sure how to handle this. On the one side, it's none of their business, on the other side, they may just be sympathizing with somebody they see as being verbally assaulted. These situations generally just lead to more name-calling.
So, we're back to square one. There is no yes or no answer, I believe.
If you don't like being called a Yank, and somebody who knows that you don't does it anyway, then you can consider it disrespectful.
Can you tell me what YMMV means, now?
