How did real exploding ack work? In AH it explodes whenever it’s close to a plane but I assume that’s not how it worked. Was it based on altitude? Or timing? If so, how did they set this?

(I wasn’t quite sure what forum to put this is, so let me know if somewhere else would be better.)

" Each shell exploded when reaching a preset altitude.  A true proximity fuse or variable time fuse was never developed by Germany despite extensive efforts to do so.  Allied planners estimated that German flak would have been about  three times more deadly  if they had proximity fused shells.  "

Unfortunately though it answers your original questions, it creates a bunch more.

You might want to repost this in the aircraft and vehicles forum. There is a gentleman by the name of Tony Williams that knows everything there is to know (or at least a good billion times more than I do) about WW2 weapons and ammunition.

Cheers

Thanks, that helped. I'll also try the other forum.
