OK, I return again to the wellspring of computer knowledge.

My 84 year old father is having computer problems. On every startup he gets a boxed message that says something to the effect that:

"The shortcut 'MORZE5.Ink' refers to a location that is unavailable. The closest program.. blah, blah, blah."

Anyway, he can't get the popup screen to go away. Ctrl/Alt/Delete and trying to end task doesn't even work.

It's tough trying to troubleshoot with an older guy that doesn't understand computers at all and doing it by telephone.

We've updated and run both Ad-aware and Spybot S&D. They found some new stuff but did not end this problem.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance.. you guys are awesome.

You  are - or were - infested with viruses.
download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

download AdAware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

I'm assuming Windows XP here. Adjust as required. This sounds like a normal (hehe) dead link.

Click Start | Run  and type 'CMD' and press Enter to bring up a command prompt.

cd\windows\profiles\all users\start menu\programs\startup

dir

Look for the mentioned link. Delete it if present.

If not,

cd\windows\profiles\\start menu\programs\startup

dir

Look for the mentioned link. Delete it if present.

Type Exit to close the command prompt window.

Failing that it's time to look in the Registry. Remind them to be very careful here.

Look in HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run

Also check RunOnce. Delete if found.

Repeat for

HKey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Run

and RunOnce.

Thanks Qts.

He's on Win98. Is it the same?

If so, I'll copy this and send it to him and hope he can follow it.

He's not real strong on this computer stuff as you might imagine.

Tried Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, CWshredder, Stinger, Trendmicro and Bazooka on this... still no resolution.

I'm probably going to have to drive up there and take it on mano-a-mano.

Unless someone else has another idea.

how about having him do a search on his HD's for the shortcut file 'MORZE5.Lnk'  and delete the dead link.

It's possibly on his desktop.
Gone from the game. Please see Spikes or Nefarious for any Ahevents.net admin needs.

Toad, Start -> Run -> msconfig

Go to the startup tab, make sure there isn't an entry there that is trying to load that thing up. It should say "morze5" in the far left column with the directory it should be in to the immediate right.

If its in the startup, there will be a checkbox to the immediate right. Remove the check, click apply, then click ok. Reboot.

Thanks, gents.

All this is on hold for now.

Real life puts things in perspective. My only brother has just been diagnosed with kidney cancer.

I'm sure at some point I'll get to Dad's and try to fix the 'puter. For now, it seems pretty insignificant.

Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it.
