I don't understand. Are you not counting the people who died after working on clean-up crews in the aftermath of the accident?

"who can count how many people died of radiation? no one, even approximately. Some tell that 400.000 dead, soyuzchernobyl report of 300.000 people that died since 1986 and this is not over, in 30 years people will still die "

That was written by Elena, but what does she know, eh?

Some even say the it was sabotage

"The Chernobyl power plant was blown up by a foreign agent! Department of Nuclear Energy, Science Academy with its research and design institutes were not ready for such an unexpected disaster. Chernobyl nuclear holocaust was not an accident. Nuclear reactors have high level of reliability proved by a number of tests. Water pumps of primary and back-up cooling systems could not have been simultaneously disabled. The picture of blown up reactor was taken too opportunely by the U.S. satellite that was "accidentally" on the proper orbit above the 4th block at that very time. Logically analyzed facts and developments of "cold war" in 50th show Chernobyl catastrophe was not an accident. That was a full-scale sabotage of the century, which resulted in breakdown of the USSR economic basis and "soviet" socialist system in general. The adversaries of the USSR made an effective use of the negligence and incompetence of the government headed by Gorbachev along with the lack of sufficient control of restricted areas."

What a pile of propaganda . as for the U.S. having satalites overhead well thats been true of bolth country's for many years . why do you think our recon planes got mothballed ??
Theres a program you can get that shows almost anywere in the world at anytime by satilite.(you can almost read your lic plate with it)

As for the reactor failure well the same thing happened at 3 mile island here ... its just fortunate that our reactor scrammed faster and the containment system of our reactors is better .
(Clue : its still a populated area , Chernobyl is deserted )

Now if you want to compare contaminated places in the world take a look at los alamos new mexico  , or the bikini islands  .
Los alamos has some levels of radiation higher then Chernobyl
The bikini's are even worse . Russia also has other places just as hot from there nuke testing program, and other accidents/ waste disposal problems , along with the fact that at Chernobyl the cooling water was dumped back into the rivers ect.

I havent even touched on whats going on at Hanford . They have thousands of spent fuel rods that need to be dealt with befor there containment bunkers/tanks go bad.

I thought the contamination was quite wide spread and the plumes of radioactive particles went everywhere. Iirc even the kids in northern countries like Norway were given iodine pills.

That's what puzzles me more than anything about atomic power, it is supposed to be "clean" energy. I didn't realize spent fuel was "clean". I guess it's either energy problems now, or an environmental disaster later.

Booooo its mr. radiation flee flee flee!

400 000 people dead, that is utter bull****. From http://www.world-nuclear.org/info/chernobyl/inf07app.htm

"Dr Kreisel said one of the conference's main achievements had been to establish scientific consensus on the known health consequences of the accident. He dismissed as "fiction" claims by Ukrainian officials earlier in 1995 that more than 100,000 people had died as a result of the accident, saying the proven death toll so far was about 40. He said 30 of those deaths were from direct exposure at the time, and there had been some 10 fatal cases to date of radiation-induced thyroid cancer."

Surely there was measurable radiation rise around the world, but that means nothing, absolutely nothing. I get more radiation when i fill my glass with water from my grandparents faucet (because of radon gas) than because of the Chernobyl accident. Nice pics tho, thats how abandonded cities look like, abandonded, rusty and damaged. If you ever been in Russia, you know thats very common scenery in there.

That WNA site has event sequence of chernobyl accident. If you really want to know what happened..

and then in April 26, in year 1986 a guy named Akimov pushed wrong button and launched the biggest nuclear catastrophe ... Akimov was jailed for 14 years and as it was in tradition with soviet justice, they put in prison all other people that worked on that day shift with no matter who was guilty and who was not.

God, I'd hate to be imprisoned for something my boss did.

Bikini has become a popular dive location. A friend just returned with some cool pics. IIRC the Saratoga was one of the wrecks he dove.

not even that many died after Hiroshima and Nagasaki all in all.
lots of people died since 1945 too ? (but did they trip over and break their neck or just had a normal death lol )

seems weird to me.

So what's your attitude towards nuclear power? I think it's a best possible source of energy. Some people have unbelievable paranoia against it, and usually these people know nothing about radiation on nuclear power plants. Pretty sad, as it's the least polluting and a very safe method of energy production. Chernobyl was an extremely rare and sad event that was caused by a total lack of safety culture.
