A couple of questions...
« on: March 01, 2000, 07:37:00 AM »
Hi everyone,

It's been a while since I've checked out AH - I flew early in the beta, and decided to wait until the product was more complete before trying again.  Before I do, though, I've got a couple of questions:

-  Clouds.  What are the clouds like?  Do they make much difference?  I flew offline and the clouds seem quite small, and unlikely to significantly affect air combat.  Is this impression true, or if not can you let me know why my impression is wrong?

-  Fuel modelling.  I've heard that there is a permanent fuel multiplier in place.  Is this true?  What effect does this have on the game?  I suspect that this favours the long-range escort-type fighters (P47, P51) over the short-range defence fighters (109, Spitfire) - is this true?

-  Flight model.  OK, I know everyone here will say it's the best.  Can anyone give me hard examples of where and why it is better than brand-W?

-  Damage modelling.  As with the flight model, can anyone give me hard examples of where and why it is better than brand-W?

Thanks for any replies.

Regards

Clouds can be a factor where they are present. Many have had tremendous fights in-and-out of the clouds. The problem is they are kinda sparse.

Fuel modeling also can be a factor, but to say it favors the long-range birds may be misleading. It all depends on the mission type you have. You do have to watch the fuel guage, though.

Flight model is a subjective argument, but if you want my opinion, I like AH better because of the feel of inertial effects. In Brand W it (to me) is easy to place my nose on an object and hold it there, instantly from any position or energy state. In AH you need a much more refined touch to get nose on. The planes behave more like any RL flying experience I ever had. There are far more qualified people here to comment on this point, however.

The damage model here maps more objects, I believe. The argument WB/AH goes like this; AH maps more objects, but some would say has over-lethal guns (long range). Personally, I think this is to some extent true, but it is not that much of a factor to me.

Connectability is hands-down, no-contest to AH, as are microwarps.

Give it a try online!

Hi TC!

I joined up yesterday for AH, come on over and well start up 249th!

Well to answer your questions :

Clouds:
It is real nice when you engage in an dogfight in the clouds, had an AWESOME fight in the clouds yesterday, it was really intense, i was in an p51 engaging an bf109 and both me and the 109 used the clouds to our advantage all the time. But alas there are to few cloud banks to make them really part of the game, i guess it is because of the FPS hit there are so few. . .

Fuel modelling:
Dont have an clue, all i know is that you have to have _alot_ more fuel in your bird here than in WB´s, and the f4u & p51 burns their fuel slowest. . .

Flight model:
Im no pilot so i cant say this is better than that, but i find the FM´s quite similar, only difference is that the AH birds seem an bit heavier and bleed E more faster, but once you have got your stick setup right it almost feel like WB (been anwhile since i flew WB tough)

Damage modelling:
Cant really do much for ye here either, i have not flown the lates ver of WB (2.75) but the only thing i was irritaded of in AH´s gunnery was the long range kills, but in this latest ver that was released yesterday pyro tuned down the lethality of the 20mm at long range, i have not evaluated this yet tough. . .

All in all i find this sim _defenitly_ worth 29$ an month and im having an really good time flying in it. . .

Hope to cya in the skyes in the future or perhaps when/if 3.0 comes out of its vapor cloud.

Regards

Clouds,
If clouds seemed small to you off line you might not have been close enough, If you look at your map off line, I was in a cloud bank in a B26 last night that streched from near field 18 most of the way to 21...dodging bee in his p38, very intese. So its not that the cloud banks are small, but there are only 4-5 banks in the game at one time.
They are an awsome effect in the game when you are in them though..

Hehehehe BEE feels a bit ashamed for the enthousiasm of SAW since he was shot down

Indeed pongo it was very intens flying in the clouds... if I remember correctly I dispatched the P38 that was escorting you then turned on you... I chased you and tried to get over you for a bounce in the pure vertical but you expected that and always turned away just when I was about to bounce   we got in the clouds .. you used them very well was not easy to see you   Anyway I followed you through a cloud and came out of cover close on your 6... I thought your tailgun was death... but NOT SO :P  Very nice fight pongo... those clouds realy made me paranoid...

Thnks for the support SAW

Oh yeah, the clouds rock!
Saw a N1k goin straight n' level, pretty-as-you-please without a care in the world.

Did a low shallow turn comin down onto his six, lunging from the clouds.  Guy checked 6, and broke.  I climbed back up (into the clouds   ), and rolled over into a lag pursuit, and he was STILL turning, probly wondering where the hell that knight 51 went, hehehe.

Caught 'im in the middle of his turn, low n' slow, and shredded his wing.

Tres cool

Only problem with the clouds is that you can hide outside of them better than inside--if there's a cloud between you and me, the cloud will mask you, but if we're both inside the cloud, I can see you. Well, your icon anyway.

Unless this has been changed since last I was in the clouds.
