1911 mags.
« on: April 08, 2004, 01:15:48 AM »
I have two 1911 style guns, a full size(custom made when I was a kid by my dad, using an AMT frame and colt slide and barrel)  and a springfield Ultra compact V10.

The mags that came with the springfield suck.

The mags that I use on the fullsize are from colt and also suck.

Who should I but mags from.

Wilson seems to get good reviews, as does Chip Mcormick.

What are the gun guys thoughts here and anyone have a link i can get them cheap?

from personal experience Wilson's would be my first and only choice.

My son has a springfield.  The mag is only seven rounds and feels cheezy.   I have had very good luck with Chip Mccormic mags and got a bunch in 8 rnd stainless for $13 each.  I gave him one and it functioned flawlessly in his gun.   I don't own a Wilson mag but heard they were good.

I believe the mag that came with my Kimber is a CM even tho it says Kimber on the baseplate (the follower has a shooting star).

More than likely it is a CM mag with Kimbers name on it. 99.9% of the gun makers dont make their own mags anyways. They farm the work out to sheet metal comapanies.

If it's good enough for Kimber it's good enough for me.

Wilson Combat 8 rounders are what I carry.  Wouldnt trust anything else.

Lazs - you might want to look into them as well - the Kimber mags definately suffer from 'cost cutting.'

so far, I haven't had one failure in my Kimber that could be attributed to the mag.   I have CM mags and Kimber ones and stock colt 8 round ones and surpluss ones and even a nickle one that is a colt mag that has to be 40 years old... all work perfectly.

I woulda bought  Wilsons but all of em seem to have the stupid padded floor plate... I guess it protects them during mag changes for competion shooting at plates and such... I have no need for that tho and it interferes with my grip.

Brownells: http://www.brownells.com .

You should not pay less then 20-25 dollars for a 1911 magazine.  At least one you expect to work everytime.

I have dozens upon dozens of Mags for 1911s.

Some junk some worth money (pre war colt 2 tones)

All of them work the same for me. I have had maybe 4-5 jams ever and only because I was using Wad cutters and the nose of the round got stuck up against the ramp, the very bottom of the ramp.

Point is, they all work the same for me. Whether its in Kimber, a Colt, spirngfield hell I even have a WW2 Remington Rand and a Union Switch and Signal 1911, never had any problems with clips in any of them.

Wilson and CM mags are usually about the same price but CM mags go on sale more often.

None of my 44's use mags and are very reliable tho.

I have yet to buy after market mags for my 1911's. I still have a fair supply of mil surplus mags that have functioned flawlessly. I even have a the military cloth pouches for 2 sets that came with them. The few commercal mags came with the weapons and they also have never given me any problems.

The are easily removed.
