Wolfala I knew what you were getting at and I understand the systems very well as I'm an F-15 Avionics tech.  What I was trying to get at is exactly what you've stated it depends on the system employed on the airframe that will determine it's capabilities.  What each and every aircraft is capable of differs as you've stated.  I'm not an F-16 guy but I can say from some sensors I've seen onboard our sister squadron I'd have to say that 16 in question may have been capable of such a system to counter IR weapons.

One other point I was getting at is their OFP suites are classified and what each and every aircraft can detect isn't knowledge that many know about, only the folks working them.  Is there a photo of that bird by chance?  If there is I can tell if it was capable cause I'm somewhat familiar with MAWS.  Being in the flight test business we see alot of new stuff.

I know it's not a waste of flares when you spare a multi-million dollar airplane or helicopter and its crew, But do you think this tactic has changed due to the nature of this conflict?

Close Air Support is vital. But with this major action this last week, And the Encirclement of a large city. I would maybe start to worry about some Hidden (20-37mm) Heavy Calibre AA Guns popping up.

Of course manning that gun would be a suicide mission, It would be rooted out within minutes.
