Author Topic: Can't get rid of pop-ups (Read 726 times)

I have a Google pop-up blocker, run Spybot and a virus program.
Whenever I close IE I get ad pop-ups, even on non-Internet web pages (on my desktop).
How can I get rid of this crap? Why can’t Spybot find it?
(I just did a virus scan and ran Spybot.)

is it a pop up or a IM spam?

There are other ad scanners too.. ad aware does not get them all.

another person on a different site had a similar problem.... here's what he wrote about it:

Look2me, though, is especially pernicious. It seems that it runs as a shell extension, reinstalling itself every time you go to delete it; it also removes Windows Explorer from the Task Manager menu, preventing you from closing Explorer to delete L2M. Fortunatley, I found a program called Kill2Me, which interrupted Explorer, deleed L2M, and everything is jake now.

Don't bother with Spybot, it is updated about once every 3 months.

Get Ad-Aware, it is updated nearly everyday.

If they are messenger popups follow these instructions

start->run->type in services.msc->scroll down to messenger right click it select properties and select disable from the pull down tab

I have been using Firefox for the last few months. Once you are used to the way it is intended to work (mouse gestures, tab browsing, etc) surfing the net becomes a completely different experience. No more pop-up ads, no more staring at a blank screen while waiting for a page to load, no more menus or icons dependence, no more having to rely on third-party download managers... there's simply no way I would return to IE now.

MSN Messenger has nothing to do with the Messenger Service built into Windows which causes spam like the screenshot above.

I spent about 3 hours loading and running every Look2Me killer that I could find, via Shane's post. (Thanks) None of them found it, however, and I couldn't find it manually via the instructions. It sure looks as if it is Look2Me, but I think it may be a newer version of the same concept as it behaves the same but must have a different name.

I finally installed a firewall and virus program as well. The firewall blocks the link, but IE still reopens a new broken link window after it is shut down.

If I ever wigged-out and decided to become a serial murderer, I think that I would target the jerks that write this @#%^ and the CEOs of the companies that hire them to do their advertising. (BTW, Verizon is one of the advertisers)

I've heard great things about Firefox/Mozilla and will probably try it some day. As it is now, however, all sites seam to open very quickly and display well. My only problem is these pop-up ads on closing IE.

I use AVANT. Has a pop-up blocker built in and is a "tabbed" browser.
