I blame the Germans.

The joy about Imperial measurement is that it's easier to make mental calculations with it - particularly division.

12 has whole number factors of 1,2,3,4 and 6
10 has whole number factors 1,2 and 5

I think that was the reason why Imperial was made the way it was because calculators had not yet been invented.

If it's easier (which I really can't argue one way or the other) I wonder why numbers are in base ten instead of base twelve?

And as for not having calculators - have you not heard of the abacus?

Well I find metric easier to work with, even though I 'think' in Imperial for most measurements.

The point about the ease of division was made to me by an old carpenter guy I used to know. But I think it all boils down to what you grew up with and find comfortable.

The abacus - fantastic tool. I wonder why it never caught on in the west?  Wish I knew how to use one.

Yeah...but if I did division with my hands, I'd end up with severed fingers all over the place!

I have to use the metric system and the Imperial system in my work.  Much of our access control equipment is of Italian mfg. ( great products) and must be well versed in metric to obtain correct placement of the units and so forth.  I carry two tape measures in my truck.  Metric is superior due to it's base 10 I like working with millimeters it seems more precise.  As a side note we did try some french equipment once but all they wanted to do was eat cheese and make love to the Italian machines next to them.  when we installed one it didn't work. ;)  the American machines kicked their arses and we sent them home.
