I know many hostages have been taken in Iraq and we hope they are all safe, but this Italian guy was amazing.  There is more in the article at the BBC web site.

"He died a hero," Mr Frattini said, adding the family had authorised him to reveal the details.

The dead man was identified as Fabrizio Quattrocchi, 36, a security guard.

As the gunman's pistol was pointing at him the hostage "tried to take off his hood and shouted: 'now I'll show you how an Italian dies,'" he said.

I think as the contractors now arm themselves, knowing they will be killed if taken hostage - the nutbag terrorists will have a fight on their hands they may not be expecting

Many of the so-called "contractors" including the four ITA boys, are little more than workers.

In a less PC world (or news filtered) they may have been called "mercenaries".

This do not reduce their role, or, more, their guts.

If he was a security guard, wouldn't he have been armed?

If you just want to look at our history closer, you'll find that the commonly used image of people ready to surrender or switching side is more applyable to our governants than to our soldiers.

But stereotypes are so easy.

Sounds like he went with honor despite the situation.  Salute to him, and condolences to his family.

Naso, so far the most I've seen of the stereotype you mention is when people piss on each other over Aces High related matters such as planes, pilots, WWII history, etc.   Unfortunately this is something that seems to occur frequently here.

As for me, I would love to visit your country one day out of all the other European countries.  Lots of places to see, and getting to taste REAL Italian food.  Maybe I'll leave the driving to someone else though ;) j/k.
