Pyro ... your 109 skins frustrated me :-)
« on: April 15, 2004, 03:34:45 PM »
Well ... my frustration started when i saw the skins of the 109G6 and G2.

The colors and the structure lines (lines and dots) are made e x t r e m e l y good.  I've tied many ways to get those effects .. with Photoshop, Illustrator, saving in AI and EPS and converting to bmp etc. If it would exist a "painting kamasutra" i would say i've tried them all.

The major problems i have is, that the lines and dots get "foggy" when i save them from Photoshop or Illustrator into BMP.

I can imagine that you won't tell us the exact procedure how you or your art-guys made those skins. No worries about that.

But. Maybe you could tell us what Software and maybe plugins you use ;) ... for example if they use some dedicated converters from Illustrator (ai or eps) to indicated BMP and give us a idea.

Thanks and cheers

Down load bright, it will prevent the loss of quality when you reduce to 256 x 256. With bright you will see no pixelation...just smooth colour

I don't do the art so I couldn't tell you what your problem is, but Nate and John use Photoshop for the textures.

What size of bmp are you saving them to?

just straight photoshop..... no plug-ins.
make them as a PSD, then once they are finished and saved, convert them to index color, then save them as a bmp.

My post was a clear compliment for your art-guys ... they have a good eye and hand for those things.

Thats my usual process:

1. made the lines and dots in Adobe Illustrator (with te original bmp in the background)

2. exported them from Adobe Illustrator ino Photoshop psd with the layers

3. worked on the skin with diffrent layers

saving process:

4. changed size of skin at 1024x1024 / 100dpi / bicubic way

5. changed mode to indexed bmp / 256 colors / diffusion 80% / and primary colors

6. saved to bmp / 8 bit

I've tried a deturn by saving from a EPS file. The result was a little, little bit better.

Pyro .. dont spend too much time on my little probem. You allready helped me a lot. Probably i'm simply to fixated on perfection on this issue.

Primary colors? Why not use adaptive?

Airmess, NATEDOG is the master mind behind the 109 skins and the 109 3D Modells, talk to him, he even posted in this thread already ;)

airmess are you starting at 256x256 size bmp, and then converting to a 1024x1024 after you work on them?  If so, you need to increase the size before you work on them.
Maybe I read your saving process wrong, but that sounds like what your problem is to me.  Also, you should just work straight out of photoshop.  No need to use Illustrator.

Thanks for your post. I really appreciate it. I forget about Illustrator now, as i know how to make the lines and dots. By using coverting from one format to another i may have lost a lot of image quality, what made those effects.

About my procedure:
I started with 1024x1024 ... not with 256. I fubared it with the conversion to eps and back to bmp etc. My fault. Now i know it better.

I it wont work tonight .. i'll ask Jack Daniels. Maybe "he's" giving me a creative push  :-)

Thanks again ... your really a helpfull bunch of community.

unzip anywhere you like,

save your image as a bmp in the same folder (no need to reduce colors bright will do that.)

The just click the batch file (bright.bat) and bright does its work.
