OK Finally...DSL is available and I sign up for it.  My question is can I get a second DSL modem for a second computer without haveing to go the way of router and such?

I'm priced out for the amount of cat5 that i'd need and wirless stuff being outragiously expensive.  I can get the same DSL modem for $15 on ebay.

If it works the same way as here, you can't.

Wireless can be quite cheap. I have a D-Link ADSL router-switch 4 ports-wireless base station (22 Mbps, 256b encryption, control on MAC address). I paid it 200€, you should have the equivalent for much less in the US.

I don't think so unless you get a second DSL line from the phoneco, complete with second access account.

What do you mean by outrageously expensive? Should be no more than $125 for router and cards for both computers unless I'm mistaken. Hell, I paid 3 times that for just a router years ago when I switched from modem to ISDN.

try froogle or pricewatch for shopping..  you will find wired to be cheaper, faster and more secure but you lose portability.

No. You can connect two PCs via a network card. (Networking built into some motherboards, like the Asus A7N8X-DLX which quite a few of us have) It's not too hard to configure - IP addresses 192.168.0.1/2 etc. If you have a firewall, some settings need to change.

My network card cost Ł22 ($39) - bought it before I had the A7N8X.

Or spend some $ and get a router.

its actually easier just to go buy a $70 (canadian)  d-link router   (more if you want wireless...) and be done with it...easiest thing in the world to setup...built in firewall that is pretty good and easy to setup...and if in the future you end up with a third computer your set (most come capable of using at least 4 computers)

you should be able to get them for a very low price from either radioshack or wal-mart...

Can't do two dsl modems with one phone line. You can do interent sharing between your PCs though if you don't want to spend the $40+ for a gateway/router/firewall.

ok just to take this discussion a tad further...I've actually upgraded my other box to XP tonite to simplify the process but to my dismay....

I spent $60 tonite on a NIC 50' of CAT5 and a hub only to find out that the chitty DSL modem that SBC sent me WILL NOT AT ALL support two computers.

Im no computer genious but i'm not a retard by any means...networking just isnt my forte

I bid tonite on ebay for a modem that my neighbor has that seems to work....wish me luck...thanks for the help

A DSL modem will not directly support two computers. But don't get dismayed. There are several ways to skin this cat. You got two network cards and some cable right? No hub? You're going to need either a hub/switch (cheap as $20) or a router (cheap as $40). The router has a built in hub/switch and is the best way by far to go. However, if you're as tight as my Dad and want to save that $20 you can connect the dsl modem to the $20 hub and then both PCs to that same hub. To do internet sharing you'll need to choose a PC to be the "primary" sharing PC. The 2nd PC will not connect unless the "primary" PC is up and running. You can then use the primary pc as your router/gateway. I won't go into the specifics unless you really want to go this way, which I don't recommend btw.

It just occured to me that if your dsl modem connects to your pc via usb cable then you won't need a hub but will need to make your cat5 cable a crossover cable. You can then connect both pcs together and they can (once configured properly) share the internet connection.

Here's the pinout for a crossover:

1-3
2-6
3-1
6-2

I'm betting though that you don't have a tool to crimp the connectors onto the cable. If not, forget about this method and buy the hub or router.
