I have a bit of Viking ancestry Nilsen.:D   Though probably not as much as you.

But my ancestral home is Lincolnshire England (700 years), where the Vikings landed.  Nearest point for the Vikings to land from Norway long before that.:D

My dad told me the ancestral house was 700 years old and built out of sod.  He didn't see it, but I think it was a story passed along by my grandfather on my dad's side, who died before I was born.  I would like to see that structure, even if it's not there now.  Hard to imagine a house lasting that long, built out of sod, but I suppose it could be true.  It boggles the mind how such a structure could last that long.

The Anazai's in New Mexico had buildings that old, or close to it.  They're built out of adobe and look like they were built yesterday.

back before WW2 they really knew how to build solid houses with quality wood. After WW2 the demad for housing went through the roof and they started using "worse" material and new and "improoved" ways of building things. The house i live in atm was buildt almost 200 years ago and there is no sign of it comming down any day soon (will prolly last another 200). Other buildings that were made with the "new and improoved" materials and ways around here some 20-50 years ago needs constant repair and maintnance. Houses from 50's to 70's are a nightmare

All's well that ends well man. Back safe and sound. I'm about 20 lbs. lighter but gaining it back thanks to the home cooking!
How about yourself? Still in the Navy? Any chance of deployment, or have you already been?

yes it a cool place Nilsen sadly I'm stuck 350 km north :(

Leslie I don't remember the kind of tree but I think it's either a oak or plane tree (I'm not sure it's the accurate translation) .
It can be a Mimosa but it's a bit to tall IMO and probably not a Ginkgo as I don't remeber seing leaf like the Ginkgo ones.

This tree is more than 10 meter high (about 30 ft).

There are houses here in Miami and surrounding municipalities made from Dade County pine, a very dense subspieces of Pine. Many are now over 100 years old.  many many homes were made from this pine.  sadly during the construction boom prior to and ending in 1926 with the big hurricane, many of these houses were simply torn down.  The remaining few will most likely remain up for several hundred years.  They are protected by being listed in many of the Town's historic registries and Dade County pine is impervious to moisture and insect damage.  The house I was born in was built in 1509.  but I haven't seen it since I was three years of age.  The streets there are also barely wide enough for a car as they were designed with carriages in mind.

Those are some very nice photos straffo of a very lovely place.  is that Normandie?

Euorpe went into the modular dwelling construction business headlong in the '70's IIRC.  I often thought that those structures would not be long for the world.  Totally lacking in the qualities that I admire most of things European, timeless elegence and superb workmanship with attention to detail.

because "WE" are Americans

ask Keith Matthew Maupin

I don't think those brave "freedom fighters" with the rags on their faces care about the I or you or he that is Mr. Maupin as he is one of us, an American - part of that "WE" you do not seem to grasp.

And I hope "WE" kick the crap out of those holding him captive and their buddies

No it's not Normandie, it's in Angers's town in Anjou very close to the Loire Valley (as you can guess there is wines en good wines in this area :D)

Normandie is a place without wine ...
That's certainly why the Normand are so sad in general :p

And Evreux the place I live is not the prettiest willage of the area ...plus it's 1/10 the size of Angers.
Even if some place are pretty this town was pretty defigured by buildings during the 70's

If it happen you visit Normandie ,Honfleur, Rouens are better place to visit.
