Introduced new legeslation to repeal the states current rolling smog emissions test exemption for cars 30 years old or older..

this is an exemption that takes into consideration that 30 year old cars are not  being driven much and smog parts are not available or were so ineffiecient as to cause more problems than they solved... it is an exemption for those who would restore and enjoy old cars.

the impact on the environment from these cars is miniscule.   this is simply a nanny law by the enemies of fun..

you guessed it... women democrats.

Isn't that "30 year exemption" set up to end with the '75 model year cars?  We had a 25 year exemption here that ended with the 75s.  They're still exempt from smog rules, but there aren't any later years being added.

mini... 76 is the cutoff date.  older cars will still be exempt.  Still... what is the point?  how many 30 year old cars are out there being driven more than a couple of thousand miles a year?

more nanny silliness from the party of the enemies of fun.   every stupid bussybody law passed is passed by the democrats... the party of women and womenly men.

there is some 80's stuff that might be interesting in a decade...  there is a lot of mid 70's stuff that is interesting too... imagine mercedes and BMW with with small block V8's for instance... A little BMW convert with an alluminum small block V8.. or some of the jag sedans with big blocks... many interesting possibilities.   try to grow some imagination MZ.

helmet laws... seatbelt laws.. 10 round magazines... ugly gun laws and a myriad of restrictions on cars guns and hobbies all the way down to model rockets and anaconda snake skin boots... night vision bans and 50 bmg rifle bans that poison gas additive and a bunch of other wacko environmental stuff... all democrats  versions of "you will shoot your eye out" or it's for your own good.  PC and "hate crimes"  affirmative action...

Look... none of us here really knows crap about economics and politics and foreign policy but... we can be assured that if we vote democrat more of the above will be jammed down our throat by those women and womenly men.

Sure, the BMW M1, Maserati Bora, Dino, or a few other exotics might be cool to have, but by and large mid-70s cars were crap and you know it.

Hasn't every US car since 1974 required catalytic converters anyway?

there are dozens of neat 70's cars from every country that aren't  worth messing with because of smog restrictions..  catalytic converters do not need to be on the exempted cars and even if they did..  converters are not big power robbers in any case..  especially modern high flow ones.

late 70's el caminos could be neat with the right drivetrains and those year vetts handle very well and are dirt cheap at this point.   They used to give away 72 chevelle/elcaminos when they were still smog tested... now that they are exempt they are valuable "classic American muscle cars" worth 10 times as much.

vorticon..  not sure if I understand you but I agree that we do not need seatbelt or helmet laws and that we should be able to make that decision without our mommies.

I don't know what you mean by makeing a fake smog control device... there would be no need for such a thing on exempted vehicles.   Modern vehicles are all computer  controled and the smog devices are part of the computer system.   the smog testing computer talks to the cars computer.

I own two vintage cars, a 65 Fairlane and a 62 Thunderbird.

The problem with 'smog' laws is that these older cars really cannot be brought up to specs short of a total redesign.  Many of the great engines of the 60's and early 70's-the 351 Cleveland, the 427 Side Oiler, the 327, the 427 Rat, etc. were killed off was because they couldn't fit into the smog testing.  Retrofitting some of these cars might bring them up to some kind of smog standards but the cost would be prohibitive and destroy the 'original' value of some of these cars.

I do actually drive the 65 Fairlane on a regular basis.  I restored her to drive everyday to work.  Her mileage isn't any worse than a Grand Marquis or any other car of her size.  I think old cars should be inspected for mechanical defects, mostly for safety reasons, but smog proofing them is pretty stupid if you ask me.  I would also say it is illegal, it is an ex-post-facto law and something that probably wouldn't make it through the courts.

My jeep drives almost exactly 9 miles a day to and from work.  It is only 12 years old and allready it has cost me ALOT of money to have it meet emissions standard in a state (kalifornia) that I'm not even a resident in.

Last summer I replaced my engine and I SOOOOO wanted to drop a V8 in it BUT because Kalifornia laws I was unable to even though it would have been SOOOO much cheaper.

A guy I work with drives a 77 corvette...he's got ALOT of high performence parts on it but can he drive it.....NO he cant.

I'm all for better environment but I think enough is enough

Yeah, that will help STRK.

What is your opinion on this?  Or are you just trolling to see who rises to the occasion.  An Ex Post Facto law is unconstitutional.  It can't be any more plain than what the constitution says.

What will be next, manditory upgrades on wiring in all houses built before 1980?  I can see how some people will probably not be able to afford that.  Who will help?  Uncle Sugar I suppose with low cost home improvement grants.  I suppose a small surcharge on all home mortgages can contribute to the cause of that.

Hows about manditory removal of all lead paint from houses built before 1960?  Not covering, absolute removal of all paint.  Think of the children.  Think of the humanity.  Think of the cost.  Oh wait, only rich people live in old houses.  Only rich people drive older cars.

Lets just idiotproof the entire world.  It will be pretty bland but hey, we will all be bored to the age of 90 together.
