Lead Computing Gunsite
« on: April 20, 2004, 01:21:27 PM »
After reading an earlier post about the Lead Computing Gunsite, I went off-line, enabled it, and played around with it for awhile.  Can somebody explain the markings on the gunsite and how they are supposed to be used?  I assume that you are supposed to use the "p51d" gunsite for this.  any help would be greatly appreciated.  If it works, it would help for developing a sense of how far to lead targets at various ranges.

Thanks,
Debuman

The Lead Computed Gunsight, LCG, is available in the Training arena ONLY,  offline or maybe H2H if enabled. It is NOT available in any fighting arenas.
To make it available, from the clipboard goto SETUP and then Arena Settings. IN there you goto Flight Mode Flags and use the Change option. You check LCG and 'OK' your way out of it.
Once available to enable it while flying, and this is based on the TA or offline where you can target friendly targets, follow these steps.
1- Hit 'control-tab' to enable Friendly Lock, system will respond with message.
2- Pick your target. This is done in one of two ways.
2A- Use the 'tab' key to cycle thru all available targets in your view.
2B- Use a 'shift-tab' to choose the target centermost in your view.
The LCG 'boxes' the chosen target icon, similar to a 'check 6 'call, and brings up small green +'s that indicate what lead is required to hit the target. You may see two +'s. This is for your Primary and Secondary gun package.

I kind of missed the part of using the actual gunsight provided in AH. Those are fairly small and to read anything on the 'historic' sights you really need to zoom in, at least I do, to see anything on them. This zooming can disorient you and cut your field of view. I use it for a guage and not really fly to get the target inside the gunsight and use it. This is also a personal preference thing. I know some guys just use a single dot gunsight where others use more elabotrate ones.

MaddogJoe, that looks like a good sight

thanks for the compliment on the site Fuseman

When using the "lead computing" site off line I like to come into the bogie at all different angles. Its surprising how far down under your dash you have to have a target to score hits, and with the site turned on, you can really see that.... when you shot, the rounds are going to go where the big green plus is.

All Aces High GREEN training sights; the LCG discussed here, the indicator for dive bombing and rocket firing, and even the bombsight for level bombing, show the impact point of the weapon selected. Those are no-brainer point-shoot-and hit the target indicators. All these green sights are off in fighting arenas and are just tools to be used to familiarize your self with the specific weapon and it's trajectory.

No wonder I can't hit anything. I never realized how much lead time was necessary to hit a traget! When I tried this last night i laughed thinking "No way it's not THAT much" Offline I killed every one ofthe flying drones in minutes. Great learning tool. Thanks guys.

The amount of required lead can surprise you.

:D   Now all we need is a little arrow that shows you where to fly to avoid getting hit.
