questions about lighting
« on: April 24, 2004, 03:05:48 PM »
Seems to me like the AH2 world does not reflect lighting from the ground. The underside of all my planes are very dark, unless I roll them and the sun shines directly on the bottom polygons.

I tried to play with the Gamma slider, but it seems to have no affect. I moved it up to the max, hit "apply", the screen flashed for a tenth of a second and the world seemed brighter, but then flashed again and returned to what it was before I moved the slider. In summary, moving the slider for me has no affect.

My system specs:
P4/2.26ghz
512mb DDR
Ati Radeon 9800 128mb

Does anyone else have the same problem ?

True radiosity is a grossly processor-intensive computation; what HTC seems to have done is defined an ambient illumination for undersurfaces. And it does appear to be set too low, or we could be seeing shadowing effects on undersurfaces without ambient illumination. Without seeing the lighting code, I couldn't say for sure what was going on. But it does seem inaccurate.

Shouldn't there be just a general, ambient illumination of things, without regard to having light reflected off a hard source?     I mean, aren't the suns rays reflected off tiny particles everywhere in the atmosphere, giving us ambient lighting, even on cloudy days, when we cannot see the sun?

To me AH2 almost seems like the lunar surface - anything in shadow is practically to dark to make out.

No changing the gama slider to lighten the dark side, washes out the light side.

Its theatrical lighting, makes it more dramatic, like the old war movies.

I like it, gives the game a sense of style!
