Author Topic: HELP!! Puter Won't Start. FIXED!! (Read 623 times)

Aloha,
Puter down!! Can't figure what is wrong. Push pwr button and fans, etc start turning then all shuts sown. Only lasts 5 seconds. CPU fan is turning and even plugged different fan into mobo incase sensing not workin. I just changed A7N8X-E mobo last month along with new Antec 480 PSU. All was running great yesterday after finishing reformat and reinstall. i took out all pci/AGP cards one at a time and all at once, dicoed ROM drives and HDD's, unplugged all fans etc and still same. I tried new power cord and plugged directly into the wall bypassing UPS. Any bright ideas??

Given you've been overclocking, it is possible your CPU is dead. Can you get hold of another CPU to try?

Has your mobo got an LED display to help troubleshooting? Usually 4 red LED's means dead CPU. No life like you describe despite PSU and fans turning is very like CPU trouble.

Thanks for the reply. No LEDs or spare CPU. You may be right but 400 mhz is pretty mild overclock for a 2500+, especially since it was totally stable and temp never went over 45 deg C.

That's if the temp sensor was accurate, and we all know they are always spot on

For cpu temp I also do the finger test. Put your finger on top of the heatsink and see how hot it is. You should be able to move your finger down close to the cpu and judge the temp. You should be able to keep the finger there for a short period of time and it should not be as hot as a poker in the fire.

Second theory. If something was recently replaced I usually suspect that. Can you go back to orig mobo and PS, a lot of hassle and work I know, and see if there is any change.

See if in any of this work a component on the mobo got bent out of shape and is touching something it shouldn't be touching. This is a long shot but worth a glance.

I give a 1 out of 100 for any of my advice to help.

Additional thought- maybe a reset of the mobo BIOS would be in order, just to make sure some setting there isn't a problem.

mb grounding out on the case perhaps ??? (it will ussually give off error beeps) try to float it (pulll all the screws and slide the anti stat bag under it )

the ram may have died also .

Fuze, thanks for reply.
I believe temp was pretty close since it matched the probe I had touching the side of the cpu. Besides, I have a pretty efficient external Watercooling setup. Ocean breeze blowing onto a DTek heatercore with 2 shrouded 120 mm fans, Eheim 1250 pump. 1/2' ID tygon tubing, and a Swiftech cpu block. I could leave my finger on the CPU waterblock all day.

I had a power cycling off problem last month so I installed the new PSU but same problem. I had already bypassed the power and reset switches so I installed the new mobo and everything was ok so I am sure the old mobo is dead. I will try the old PSU next.

Roscoroo thanks for the reply,
No beeps at all, fans prolly only turn 3 seconds. If the PSU doesn't help, i will try floating the board. i didn't have to replace the standoffs when I installed the A7N8X-E Deluxe cause it replaced an A7N8X Rev2 Dlx.

I already tried swapping the RAM around and tried an extra Crucial stick by itself.

Ahhh h20 cooled ... ya might of shorted it out from condensation
(popped a capacitor or something)
I did that to my water cooled machine .. I learned to wipe it down /blow it out every few days and its been fine since then . (Seattle area )

Anything is possible but I have never seen a drop of condensation anywhere. It has been in the mid 80's here and quite dry.

RMA the mb and cpu beshure you clean the artic silver off real good with a tooth brush/ thumbnail

the asus mb's have a 3 yr warrenty and i think the cpu's have a 1 yr

HMM....
Now I feel like a dummy. The waterblock wasn't making good contact and the COP shut it down so I can't say it hasn't been over 45 deg anymore. I don't know how it could have been cocked cause the holdowns were engaged on all 6 tabs and they are spring loaded. I reseated the waterblock with new Artic Silver and all is well again. I put the 480 PSU back in but at least now I know the 430 is still good. Thanks to all who replied.
