Beta Arena..
« on: December 28, 2000, 01:21:00 PM »
I dunno how the server operation is setup at HTC, but just a thought...

When a new version is being released, like 1.05 is now, could it be placed in an arena other than the MA for the first week or 2?

I see a lot of unhappy people (i'm not one of them) saying things like "1.05 ruined AH for me" etc.  Perhaps a beta arena would still give these people a place to fly for their $30.

Perhaps there are reasons I am completely ignorant of, but I think this is a good idea...

Hi Skurj,
I would think the main problem is that it is completely new software. I'm sure it could be done if the "exe" was called something different but you would have to call 2 different programs (Unless a general frontend was setup with a choice).

Mind you I'm still willing to bet that (Taking 1.05 as an example) everyone would much prefer to play with the new version even with the current "Features" rather than go back to the old version.

All 5 people who think AH has been ruined due to 1.05 can go play WB or wait for WW2Online.

Sounds terrible doesn't it? Well what is worse is listening to the complaints, all without substance.

Anyone who thinks HTC's latest effort ruins the sim for them doesn't belong here in the first place, IMHO.

I've heard a couple of posts asking about a beta arena for load testing but, if you think about it, with everyone desperate for 1.05, all the flyers would be in the beta arena anyway.

The end result would be the same - everyone in 1 arena flying the new version.  Why not the main arena and be done with it?

Heh well from the look of this nice short thread, I guess we need not worry about HT wasting bandwidth on keeping old versions alive even temporarily for the few

Woohoo this horse is dead!

Off to join the fleet!

That "Beta arena" is a bad habit, and that bad habit I bet you have dragged with you from WB under IENs leadership, right ?

As far as I know, over at WB, the beta arena is almost always empty, so why bother here ?

1.05 is the best thing that has happened to online gaming yet

PS. this is not a flame!

You smell that? Do you smell that?
Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that.
I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
The smell, you know that gasoline smell, smelled like victory.
