Tonight in the CT the subject of French beer was brought up.  One person wanted to know if the french actually brewed beer.

I recall a fairly strong ale called St. Amand which really "hit" it was in a quart bottle (more or less).  I also recall a type of pilsner beer which was very fine.  I have forgotten the brand of the second beer.  both of these I drank in the south on the Cote d'azur (ville franche).

How many different beers are brewed in france?

But, honestly, even if we brew some nice beer, belgium is the king of tasty beers !

2nd that they do some great beers. Got plastered on one called Duvel or something about 7% proof think Duvel means Devil and rightly named.

What's the average alcohol volume of US beer? Some kiwi mates were in the US drinking watched their US mates get drunk while the Kiwi's were deciding who was going to drive.

Duvel is Belgian, 8.5%. Too strong for me. I don't like beers to be much above 5%, so that I can drink plenty!

Mora - agreed, that Kronenbourg is not the best one. The better one is 1664 - Seize cents soixante quatre - try saying that after you've had about five of them and your first language is not French!

Another French beer - Stella Artois.

Hey Storch, I had an apartment down by Côte d'Azur - Antibes. Great area. Where did you stay?

The irony is that I don't like beer much... I prefer a good french red wine...go figure!

When UK use to drink alot of german beer as well. 2 partciular favourites. Sorry not sure on spelling where. Adventinus and Schniderwiess great beers that came in massive bottles.  :D

You can by Duvel here in NZ for any Kiwi's reading, just have to ask any liquor store to get it in. Not cheap though, but worth it. Great drop.

USS Bigelow (DD942)  I had a great ocean view.  and no we didn't watermelon in the bay.  Yes I really liked southern France.  I don't remember seeing many automobiles and the streets running up from the seaside were stepped.  The older Frenchmen wore berets and when you passed them they tipped and greeted you bonjour/bon soir.  on my second trip ashore I wore a ballcap so I could tip my hat also.  very nice.  the food was outta this world.  I ate mostly seafood dishes.  wish I could remember the names but one was an octopus dish, I really liked octopus.  We were there for about one week.  German beer is king IMHO.

Yep I agree the best French beer are made in Belgium ;)

When was it ?
I would say some year ago because the beret isn't wore anymore since :)

@Nilsen : I tasted  Lapin Culta ,I think it's just average IMO.

1977 Straffo, some of the older men only.  very quaint and very polite people.  My father still wears a beret on cold days (about three per year here).
