Ford Explorer thoughts

I'm looking at picking up a 2000 Ford Explorer. Its loaded V-8 4WD all that crap.  I know the mileage sucks, but I'm almost positive it will be better than my old 87 F150. Just would like to get some thoughts from some unbiased owners. Any reliabilty issues, safety, misc. features etc etc.

Please no FORD SUX crap;)

Bizket,

Bought my 1996 Explorer new in Nov of 95.  Got 178k on it now.  Put the third set of tires on it last summer.  Still on second set of brakes and put new shocks on it last summer.  Couple of tune ups, changed the oil every 4-5k.  Zero problems.  Its has been paid for for the last 3-1/2 years.  Looks good.   It has been a great vehicle.  Wife has a new car but I can not part with my truck.  I think it knows it way home.

Just my experience.

Just kidding Its a good little SUV.
Just dont ask it to fly around corners LOL.

We have the 4.0 liter OHC engine and she does pretty good.

How many miles on the one you looking at?

its a 2000 and its got a V8...u sure?

WE have a 200 Sport 2dr 4WD.  We have 2 kids and 2 dogs and its perfect for out family.

WE get about 25 MPG on the HW and 20 in the city...(with a few mods)

It does great in the snow and great in rough terrain....the interior has held up for at least 60k miles.

the only major mait. problem we had was w/ emissions...one of the cats and O2 sensors went bad.  (search for thread "exhaust ?"  dealership really fubared the repair but its all better now.

Other than that its really comfortable...the only other SUV that I've liked better than it was a 4DR dodge durango.

Keep the tires inflated to near max capacity. Good for most vehicles, actually.

I had 2 tread seperations within 3 months about a year ago...... both traveling from Phoenix to Tucson on I-10.'

Ask Steve, he has seen my truck in the aftermath ( F-250)

I was over 70 MPH both times, same tire seperated both times and tore the whole side of the truck apart..... very scary

Wow,
Good thing you're okay. Same thing happened to my brother inlaw driving his Nissan Quest. Shredded the outer tread on the right rear tire while driving on the freeway. Luckily the tire held its pressure. Scary thing to happen.

I have a '95 and had no problems until around 130,000. Since then it has been constant maintenence. It has about 185,000 now. Ford must have designed their sensors and electronics to die at 130,000. Seems like I had to replace every single one right around then. No major breakdowns other than a new tranny (also right around 130K). It still drives like a dream, I wouldn't be afraid to take it on a roadtrip.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

I have a 98 with the 6-cyl SOHC.  Good power for a 6, no problems.  It's surprisingly good in snow, better than my old Bronco was.

I was wrong about that. The other one had the towing package so I assumed it was a V8.
