ok heres my gripe

The AI puffy ack is a *****.  There doesn't seem to be anything you can do to avoid it, it'll just puff around your plane whatever you do.  And all you can do is hope it doesn't hit ya.  In the game it will rarely hurt you, but AFAIK it's the only 'random' way to die.

Oh I've been killed by it at different alts several times. Usually when I get killed by it its of the 1 ping variety.
But that happens to infrequent I dont even bother trying to avoid it
While it wasnt that effective it did manage to cause some damage as these pics will show.
Then again after looking at these pics I dont know if these aircrews would agree that the flak wasnt that effective lol

On October 15, 1944 "Little Miss Mischief" took a flak hit on the left side near the ball turret. The blast threw the right waist gunner to the floor, with shrapnel in his foot. See the next photo for another view of this hit.

This B-17 took a direct flak hit in the waist over Debrecen, Hungary which killed three crewmen and wounded two others. Threatening to come apart in mid-air the pilot nursed it home to a safe landing, but the weakened fuselage collapsed on touchdown.

Some more evidence of flak ineffectiveness LOL

 1st Lt. Lawrence DeLancey managed to get his B-17 back to England after a direct hit by flak killed two of his crew over Cologne, Germany.

 "Gold Brick", a B-17G of the 100th Bomb Group, 349th Bomb Squadron, was lucky enough to make it home to Thorpe Abbotts after the mission to Buchen on April 7 1945 when flak claimed the right stabilizer. She was repaired and late in the war flown home to the States sporting 100 mission symbols.

Must have been in a P-47D-30.


   D30s are routinely knocked down by the CV ack 15 miles away at 22k, wether you're doing slight turns or not. I'd say it's about 30% kill rate on me, no other plane I fly gets hit so often, not even straight and level B-17 formations at 12k. I'm betting there really is a jug bug.

Booz...

I will take a piece of that action :). Any fighter (and I do mean ANY) that I have flown into the 88's for much more than a minute has been shot down. I avoid the freakin stuff like the plague.

Heck, once a while back, I was on a streak of 8 entries into 88 mm ack and 8 deaths to it. HT decided he would wing with me. We flew into some 88mm over a CV. Result....NB go BOOM!!! I ended the streak at 9.5. Next trip in, it only killed my engine :).

One thing I did learn, the targeting code for the 88's is entirely random (just like AW...the fargin randomizer hates me :D). Bottomline, you stay in it long enough, the odds are gonna getcha.

NB,

I only use F4UDs and F6Fs to loiter over CVs. I'll often keep 10-12k over it and direct incoming crusier gunfire for periods of 4 to 8 minutes and don't recall ever been hit. Constant turn, y'know.

  I accept occaisional hits when I decide to fight near the CV inside it's umbrella jumping zekes with my spit or pony after they come out of ack. I don't have a problem with how that part of the code is working. Bombers could even use a few more hits, they get away with level stable inbound flights way too often.

   But if I use a P47D-30 otw elsewhere (using slight jinks as soon as I see the puffs) while multiple lower, closer & slower targets exist between me and the boats there's more danger than ever.
  Someone even noticed just the other day as he was flying near me, where's that ack coming from and why is it so heavy, I answered there's a CV in this sector and it's because of my ju...  yes, died.

  This is the situation I'm talking about and I consistently get whacked with 1 hit wonder shots 10+ miles away at 20k. I don't call that eventuality, that's goofy.

   It sure seems some code that affects high, distant jugs shoulda been meant for buffs. But if you know for sure that it's totally random, I get better dice rolls in real life :)

one point would be that flak in real life took time to re-aim... so turning/changing alt worked, in this game the ack is ALWAYS on target  and re-aims instantly on a moving target

So do I.
But can you imagine all the whines of people who have done visable damage like that to a plane and whine about it not dieing.

Actually I'd like ot see graphical damage like they had in "B17 The mighty 8th"

the contrails at alt would be cool too

we must remember to take our hats off to the pilots and crews of bombers

it defies beliefe that they even made it home

*stands up and salutes to the pilot who flew that b17 home with the direct hit*
