Ping time refers to how long in time it takes one packet to travel to its physical destination. One packet is a very small amount of data, so small its insignificant in terms of bandwidth.
Online gaming doesn't use much bandwidth. Back in the days when modems were common, at Air Warrior we found that people could throttle their 28k or 33k modem's bandwidth back to 19k or even 14k to improve the stability of their game connection (less warping and tendency to disco).
