Question about planes losing power...
« on: May 04, 2004, 10:10:16 PM »
Planes seem to lose power at certain sections of altitude.

I've felt this happening to a lot of planes at various alts.. for instance, the Fw190A-5 loses power from 7000ft to 10000ft, and it's impossible to engage WEP during that section of alt.

Now, is this what I think it is? Is this the effect of the superchargers kicking in?

If so, I've never noticed it being so pronounced in AH1 - the Fw190A-5 for example, the engine 'spools down' upon entering 7000ft and max level speed hardly pushes over 250mph. It is not until the A-5 goes over 10,000ft that the power is regained(as seen in the speed graph).

Is the power loss upon entering the "supercharger" interval of altitude so drastic in WW2 planes?

Heres what I get

A5

4k mp drops gradually from 42.5 wep available
6k drop continues but moves up/down a bit wep available
7k mp hits 35 mp no wep available

above 7k mp climbs rapidly to 42.5 wep available

A8

4k slow drop in mp from 39.5  wep available
7k 35 mp wep available
8k 33 mp no wep avvailable
9k back to 39.5mp wep available

I didn't do speed tests at those alts where the mp hits min with no wep.

There is currently a bug in that system that HT is trying to troubleshoot.  It's causing some strange things to happen.  It should be working fine in the next release.  But your MP will drop when you exceed a critical altitude.

Those of you in the know...

I know well of the concept of critical alt. and engine performance, but I do not know the AH planes well enough to know how the various planes will be affected.

Will the high alt. performance of the planes be substantially different then what we have now in AH?

Any thoughts?

Pyro, when this bug is squashed, will the desired effect allow for WEP to be engaged at these various altitudes mentioned?

I'm in the same boat as Jodgi.  What is "supposed" to happen?  I'd assume the pressure would drop off as altitude increases.  Do we have any current planes where the supercharger is *not* automatic?

It's no different than it is in AH1 except that you can see your manifold pressure drop.  If you look at the performance tables for AH1, you can see the critical alts and where performance drops off and where wep is unavailable, but you didn't necessarily get a cockpit indication of that.  Now you do.

In AH1, when you are at a certain altitude where the MAN has dropped off, and the charts show no speed gain of WEP over regular full MAN, and you engage WEP, you hear the engine tone raise.
There aren't any changes besides that engine sound, no RPM change, nor MAN etc, so is it really supposed to sound different?

It shouldn't sound different, but it does.

Gotcha. :)

In AH1, the F4U-1C's manifold pressure gauge seems screwy.  At a certain range of altitude, the gauge will be in a decreased position.  Adjusting the throttle input changes the RPM heard, but has no effect on the position of the needle until further decreasing throttle input.

Ill see if I can dig up the thread I made a while ago.

Found it:  http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79179&highlight=chog

^ posted that a little over a year ago.  I haven't tested it in AH2 yet.  Again, coming from a semi-clueless dolt, was that intended or was (is) it a bug?
