History quiz
« on: August 20, 2001, 02:49:00 PM »
Hello everybody.
Maybe this post would rather belong in the History department, but since there is so much traffic here, I try it anyway.
I am trying to find out the identity of 3 Luftwaffe Pilots, who all where shot down and survived.
The first one was shot down on the 22nd of november 1942 over Bone airfield in N africa, - Tunisia. I have found no loss report regarding him from the German side. Plane was a 109.
The number two and three were flying 190's in the Dreux area sw of Paris, and were shot down on the 24th of June 1944. I have not succeeded in finding any LW loss reports from that day.
All three fell prey to F/O Jonsson, flying a Spitfire VB in the African theater for 111 squadron RAF and P51C in the European theater for 65th squadron RAF.
The pilot of the 109 was captured and his aircraft too. I located a picture of an aircraft that was supposed to be this one, but it proved to have a wrong tag on it.
(IWM mistake apparently)
The FW190 pilots remain almost a perfect mystery, the only thing known is that they both baled out, and that one was almost certainly a veteran while the other was not.
So, there is my riddle, any help solving it is appreciated
  :)
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

Not trying to sound like a pessimist, but you probably won't find an answer here.

As german reports go they're scattered at best. Alot of stuff was lost at the end of the war. (burned classifed ect.) Even the Americans would "rub" numbers to show that numericaly they where winning the war. You can find alot of errors on both sides.
