that there is such a majority of luftweenies/german orientated squads, and players in online games?

no whine, no rant, just a question.

Why not?  109's and 190's are some of the best looking aircraft ever built.  :)

I know I got into LW planes because I love B-17's and read a lot of books in my childhood that talked about 190s and 109s as the enemies of B-17's.

Besides, I'd bet that there are lots more "American" squads out there that fly primarily US iron, as well as tons more "Allied" squads.  It's just that nobody calls them allied squads since there are so many that they don't stand out as "niche" squads.

At best, LW squads are just the biggest minority.

it's a personality type..

that type often needs structure and regimentation in their (virtual) lives. they get confused and angry when they need to ad lib or things don't go as expected and requires spur of the moment intiative. they don't like to take risks. they like to perceive themselves as the underdog bad guy with superior intellect/skills, a doomed hero admired by all.

ever notice they're usually the most anal retentive and nit-picky over the most minute of details?

not all who fly lw planes have this personality type, nor do all with this type join lw squads, but there is truth to the old adage that birds of a feather flock together.

this same type can be found in most rigidly structured squads with clearly defines roles regardless of their "national affliation" or whether or not they use a historical squad.

Shane's right about that too.  In my squad, we all goose step from the hangar to the runway, make sure that we press the N button to appear simultaneously otr, and we issue squad ranks, promotions, medals, and only call each other by our rank.  We only speak German on vox, too.  And we polish our leather underwear after every squad night.  Oh yeah, we have squad nights.

And if you believe that we do any of the above, you need to wing with us sometime to get edumacated.  :)   We're nothing more than a bunch of guys who like 190s.  "regimentation" my arse.

the Luftwobble squads are to be commended! The Bf's and FW's
are, shall we say,a bit more difficult to fly,and the guns are a slap in the face to German technology.I've noticed the LW guys are mostly very well behaved, and good to have around in a furball.
The ones that fit into Shanes mold in my opinion, are the sons of Nippon.Flying them 4 cannoned ufo's,that have a seemingly endless supply of ammo, and a range that exceeds belief.
Thats my couple of cents worth.Better get out of here, before Shane accuses me of ankle humpin,or calls me a fweenie:lol

Yawohl, Germans admire good organization and efficiency.  Forming fighting units seems a logical extension from that.

At least that's what has been ingrained in my German-Scotch-Irish-Dutch (and maybe Swiss) heritage, i.e., curb the griping, no whining, quit screwing around, carry your fair share, get the job done, and don't get a fat head about it.

shane is correct and everyone knows it... also..  the fastest LW planes take the least skill of any planes to fly... the guns hit hard so that you don't have to tarry and maybe expose yourself to a fight.

Oddly enough...A lot of LW guys don't like hearing this tho.. They cry mightily.   I wish they would make up their minds if they were dark, evil and ruthless precision nazi pilots or... just crybabies with no skill who fly for the girly grey.

It's a preference about a certain stereotypical aspects of the German military. For one thing, them being the historic loser in the first place, intrigues and invokes interest in a lot of people.

Psychologically, there are two different preferences in people when they assume a certain 'role' to themselves; the first type is the "othodox" type. They pick the historic winners.

If it were a classic fantasy-based role-playing game they'd probably be on the "side of the light". For a certain "job", they'd pick something like the casual and normal 'warrior' or the 'knight' and etc etc.

The opposite preference to that also exists, which is known as "the unorthodox type".. as some people prefer to choose the "side of the darkness". In role-playing games they love choosing the uncommon, weird, and unorthodox type of characters. Its can be viewed as a surge of individualism by denouncing and rejecting the normal conditions.

A classic example is the movie "Star Wars" - while many people are intrigued by the noble of order of the Jedi or the Rebel Alliance, a lot of other people are more interested in the Empire. Those two are opposite extremes - the Empire appeals itself in its uniformity and organization, unlike the Rebel Alliance which is basically a loosely formed rag-tag band of warriors who are living symbols of Bohemian freedom.

As a general rule of thumb, the "orthodox types" set higher values in emotion and freedom, relating to the concept of "Romanticism". On the other hand, the "unorthodox types" stand on the side of reason, self-control, organization and discipline - which can be summarized into the concept of "Modernism"

Ofcourse, this doesn't mean the former is a careless irresponsible person, and the latter is a regular neo-Nazi.

It's just a way how our inner cravings and sub-conscious values, and fascinations, manifests itself in the form of virtual identity. For instance a person could be very reasonable and organized in his normal life, but his subconsciousness may choose to convert, and express itself in the form of the opposite side when an opportunity rises - such as when we create alter-egos in gaems, or root for certain heros or anti-heros while watching a movie. Much the same, a very free and liberal person, might choose to become something very different when he makes up an alter-ego.

So basically, one type of person is a "Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde" sort of being, while the other is "no differences, both inside and out".

And no other type appeals to the unorthodox, than the German side, in these sort of games.

I'm definately the 'unorthodox' type. I hate flying things which many people already fly. I hate making up same type of characters when playing role-playing games. I don't care if my character is weak or sucks balls - as long as its original. As long as its pretty much certain that no-one else develops his game character in that way, I'm satisfied. I'll choose the ugly looking guy, or the fat guy, or the wierd freak type of character when playing games. In martial arts fighting games, I'd choose the character with the most weird/absurd type of fighting style.

And when it comes to AH, I'll usually fly German in the MA. If in the CT I'll play the Axis. If German planes aren't available I'll play with the IJN/IJAAF planes(but not the Niki..), and if both of them aren't available I'd stand on the side of the Soviet planes rather than British or the USAAF/USN.

It's just that something different from the 'mainstream' intrigues me more.

What you and Shane have said is basically just another "Why I'm the Real Pilot, and the Rest of You are all Dweebs" manifesto, lazs :)

If that were the case, wouldn't they all fly La-7s or P-51Ds? Clearly the P-51D is especially better suited for MA combat than any Fw190D-9 or a Bf109G-10. Better dive, better at high alts, 50cals, long flight duration, better ordnance.. etc etc.

Not to mention the Luftwobbles I see in the MA rarely use those two - I see them using the G-2 or the F-4, or the Fw190A-5 or the A-8 most of the times.

The "Fast plane lovers are Pansies" theory doesn't explain everything ;) Don't go the way of Freud! Basically, even if they would fly early war planes like you'd approve, they'd still fly a C.202 or a Bf109E-4, or a A6M2 - rather than use a F4F-4 or a FM-2. So, how do you explain that?
