Will Powell quit?
« on: May 06, 2004, 06:14:42 PM »
I overheard something on TV about Powell quitting for the next term. Apparently he does not wish to serve the Bush administration again.

Althought I have not confirmed it, if it is true, what could this mean? I know one of the winning points for Bush in the past election was having Powell next to him. Could it hurt Bush that Powell makes it seem he's not happy with the way his administration acted?

Powell is the only politician I know of that is universally respected, not only by both main parties in the US, but by the rest of the world, including potential enemies of the US.

Powell was kept behind courtains for some unexplained reason during the past four years. I believe that Bush made a mistake by placing most of his trust on miss Rice instead of Powell.

Althought so far that I know of  he has not made a strong statement against the way his boss is running the show (Powell is not the kind of person to demean the president, no matter what), could his unwillingness to continue serving this administration be taken as a sublime statement against the Bush administration?

All I know is that if Kerry were to win the next elections, and Powell surprises the world as a presidential candidate for the 2008 elections, things would be VERY interesting indeed.
Many democrats would put party aside and give him the vote.

Althought that situation is highly unlikely, Powell has the potential to be one of the great american presidents.

Cited personal reasons for his quitting. But who knows for sure.

Here is an interesting article

And I recommend reading the Time magazine with the cover "Where is Colin Powell?"

If he's smart (and I think he's very smart) he will run like the wind and disavow any knowledge of The Bush Administration's existence.
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

He's been gonesers since for at least a year.

There's no question. If Bush loses, he's out. If Bush wins, he's out.

He was always a one termer, and the only mess he is tired of is the media-the same reason he won't run for President.  Damn shame, too.

He's a good guy.

The only one of them that I trusted, even despite when he was trying to lie to me.

HIS book is about the only one I look forward to.

Agreed I think he would be one of the best presidents we could ever hope for.

He's smart and as far as we know honest.
great military career family man very we educated .
And most importantly just a likeable fellow.
But I am afraid America is simply not mature enough for an African American Pres.

Very sad indeed.:(

I've met and spoken to him a few times when he was CJC and also prior to his cabinet position in social settings. He has a laser-sharp focus and does not suffer fools gladly.

He has consistently stated in public and in private that he will not seek the presidency and that decision is final. He truly is an honorable gentleman toward his nation and to his family. He is not a politician.

He and his family struck a deal: After his retirement, he would accept an appointed position where he felt he could serve his country effectively if asked, and in return, he would never subject his family to the rigors and loss of privacy that come with a political campaign. After all they sacrifced during his 35-year ascension of rank and responsibility in the military, it would be their turn.

Colin Powell has never been about Colin Powell. It has always been about serving his country. He is a rare breed - A true patriot.

They would never. He cannot be controlled by a party.
Not that he wants to run anyways.

A shame. Like I said before, he has the potential to be one of the great american presidents, and an asset not only to his country but to the whole world. The guy has such a presence and such an aura of integrity, wisdom and resolve that its almost surreal. He seems like a fictional character.

I remember a conference he did for international youth on MTV. Even talking to kids on that stupid channel he spoke with a great respect, confidence and authority that you would only feel "I would accept this man as my leader through anything."
