bomber question
« on: May 09, 2004, 09:30:10 AM »
this is a request for you bomber buffs out there.

Since ive been playing ah the only way that ive been able to hit any thing in a bomber is to climb to exactly 10k over a target and line my planes up and kind of kentucky windage my eggs, i always have mixed resualts either too soon or too late.

what im asking is whats the formula if there is one? you know wind+speed+alt=x  i want to perfect this aspect of the game, because im in awe every time i see one of you guys drop eggs right on target.:D

Do you know about F6 and bombsight calibration?

There is a post out there that was very well writen tho i cannot find it so here is a  crash course in bombing. If you see me in the MA give me a shout. I started off with bombers in the MA and used to spend hours in them.

First plan your bomb run out. One that has the least amount of turns in your rout as posible. The less turning you do the more accuratly you will be able to calibrate for speed when the time comes. There are a few ways to turn that I know of. You can use the your rudder to move the plane left or right from the gunner position. This can be done either when in level flight or auto climb. This is the best way to turn because you are not making drastic changes in altitude or left and right turns which will effect your speed one way or another.

You do not want to change speed and throtle drasticly during your mission. I always go full throttle unless my drones are having a hard time keeping up. If they are lagging behind then just throttle back for them and wait for them to catch up a bit. Then you can most of the time return back to full throttle and continue. Speed is the most important vairiable here as it is the toughest in my opinion to keep constant. So you want to do you best to make sure that when it comes time to calibrate, that you speed has not changed and will not change from the time you calibrate to the time you drop your bombs.

With all that said here is what I do step by step through out...

1) Level off at least 25 miles from target at which point I also open bomb bay doors. (Doors when open create drag and slow you down. So you want any slowing down your plane will do because the doors are open to be done with well before you calibrate)
-the earlier you go lvl the better because your speed will even out  and you will get a more accurate speed reading and calibration so keep that in mind when picking a bomb run.

2) I like to calibrate with the target in sight. Meaning... When in the nose gun zoomed in, and when I see the target, I make sure that I am lined up with the target and then hop into the scope to calibrate.

3) Here is where you make or break a good bomb drop. To get into the calibration scope hit "F6" from the pilots position. You will see this..

From here you want to hit "U" to enter the calibration mode. Bring up your clip board and click on your target with your cursor. Now for what I think is the part people have the most trouble with. When you enter calibration mode the red writing in the top left corner will turn yellow. Looking like this.

To calibrate for speed you want to push the joystick forward bringing the cross hairs up infront of the  plane. Not too far but enough to allow you to take a good speed reading. Zoom in as much as you can by first hitting "Z" for zoom mode and then the bracket keys to further zoom in.

Next, find a land mark out infront of you. Something that standsout... Anything. I try to find a dot or a road on the ground... Anything that stands out... But is directly infront of you. You dont want to move your cross hairs side to side... Keep them straight and in line with your bombers. Once you've found your "land mark" or that dot ect., use the joystick to keep your cross hairs on that dot as perfectly still as posible and while doing this hold the "Y" key down. I like to hold the "Y" key down for 7-10 seconds. YOU MUST KEEP THE CROSS HAIRS ON THAT DOT AS STILL AS POSIBLE WHILE HOLDING "Y" OR SPEED WILL NOT BE PROPERLY CALIBRATED.

After all of that is done, your speed and altitude is calibrated  press "U" to exit calibration mode. The yellow letters at the top left will now apear in green and look something like this.

Now you are ready to go. From this point it is critical that you do not move your throtle up or down. If you need to make SMALL left or right adjustments you can do so from WITH IN THE BOMB SCOPE by using your joystick. If you need to move left slightly, just push your stick left and you will see your cross hairs slowly move left and the same for right. But do not make any huge turns. That should have been done before you got into calibration mode.

I hope that helps, and even more so makes sense. lol! Like I said there was a post out there that I tired to find that gave a prety good "how to" on calibration and bombers ect. I couldn't find it:(

Anyways. If you have any more questions or want me to delete this post because it confused you more than helped you, Let me know and I will:D

You let your bombs go when your cross hairs are on your target. If you have done everything correct they will impact at the point in which you let them go at.

Yep, Morpheus' explanation is what you need. Always make sure to have a constant speed, alt and heading, making drastic course/alt/speed changes will affect your drop alt dramatically.

Always make sure the drop alt and your alt are exactly the same, 1 yard off will mean about 100 yards off target.

When you're lower then the required drop alt, you need to drop your bombs later than you have the target in sight.

When you're higher, you need to aim in front of your target.

So if you're 1 yard higher than the drop alt, drop your bombs about 100 yards in front of your target.

This is pretty much what I do when I go up in a bomber. Not always but most of the time.

Its a good way to allow you to go afk and not have to worry about getting shot at:D  Besides who's going to shoot at you at 36k or so? lol;)
