A lot of times, a simple upgrade can reap huge rewards.  A single stick of RAM, a newer video card (not necessarily the leading edge one either) can make all the difference.  It may not stop the decrease in FPS, but instead of 20, it may only drop 10.

Also, check to see if you have other stuff that you don't need running in the background.  I have cut many things that I don't need from the services and startup menus and I get pretty decent performance.

If you have onboard video on your motherboard most likely it will not run AH2 or it wont run it acceptably. (I know... thats what I had till I added a video card to play AH2)

Most systems that are bought off the shelf (Walmart, Best Buy, Circuit City) have onboard (integrated) video hardware.

I added a GF4 64MB card and bumped my system RAM up to 512SDRAM and AH2 runs fine now.

The end of AH1 is near...Pyro has already posted on the announcments forum that AH2 release is close.

Download AH2 BETA from the announcements forum and check your system out.

Let's keep the teeth gnashing and hand wringing to a minimum when AH2 goes live and AH1 goes into the history books.

You HAVE been warned Muhahahahahah!

Oh yeah if anyone is interested in being able to play old AH1 films after AH2 comes out I suggest you download the current version of AH1 NOW and burn the setup file to CD.

What kind of video card do you have?  Also, are your problems in the latest version of the beta or from an earlier version?  You will get some stutters the first few times you play when you encounter some new textures that haven't been cached yet, but that ony happens the first time and then you're good to go for that particular texture, whether it be a terrain texture or a new plane skin.

RAM, 256 Megs more!!

We need to know what Video card you have in this Dell.  I'm betting it's an "On Board" one.  If that's the case you'll need a video card, ATI ot Nvidia.

Umm...I'm running a 1.7 GHz but I also have 512 RAM and an ATI Radeon 9600XT Vid Card with Omega's Cat 4.2 drivers.

Check out your video card!

Hey TrueKill

You need to upgrade your video hardware from "integrated" graphics to an AGP video card. According to the dell site your motherboard has 3 PCI slots and 1 AGP slot.
Therefore you need to upgrade to an AGP video card.

Here is a link to the specs on your system:

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx?c=us&cs=19&id=dimen_4600&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=specstab#tabtop

Here are a few links for AGP video cards under $100.

Hope this helps!

From the link that Sundowner posted:

Integrated Intel® Extreme Graphics 2

Optional: 128 MB GeForce®  FX 5200 graphics card (8X AGP) with TV out

Optional: 128 MB DDR ATI® RADEONTM 9800 Pro graphics card with DVI and TV out

If you didn't specify one of the optional AGP cards then you're using the Intel device built into the motherboard.  Luckily the mobo DOES have an AGP slot.  Buy an new video card.  ANY new video card would be better than the Integrated.

Yeah, and another 256MB stick o' RAM would help tons too.  You'll be amazed at the results an additional $100 -$150 in hardware will get you.

Why is everyone complaining about the system requirments for AH2? I was able to get it to run on a Intel Celeron 550 with 128 megs of ram and a Geforce 4 440. Of course with all the graphics sliders down but it does run fine. And the fps dosen't drop below 30. At first I had some screen freezes but that was just from new textures being cached as someone stated above. Only problem I have seen is this is an spare pc and it has 56k and its more warping going on than in AH. Glad I have dsl with my main pc. Guess the more textures and better graphics choke out 56k. This might be a good thing though;)

I know this is not my business but.......

This is very reasonable that HTC will loose castomers when it will make AH2 mandatory - because of new requremnets of graphics.

However, HTC will also loose castomers if they will not upgrade graphics engine.

IMHO, the best would be if they will support 2 graphics engines. The update of most of game feachers do not require system update. However lots of players do not care of high res textures of other graphics feachers.

If both old and new graphics engines were supported that would solve both problems.

The way WB did with 2.77 version that had two engines.

I personally like current engine..........

Had an old gigabyte mobo laying around with 512mb of sdram in it. Purchased this http://directron.com/350power.html , this http://directron.com/sc152.html , this http://directron.com/fd-14-mit.html , this http://directron.com/duron12.html (sold out now, but for a couple of more dollars you can get 1.6), through in old geforce2 64mb, an old 10mb HD and windows 98 and have a decent backup computer. That's 84 dollars. If your motherboard has an AGP socket and is expandable to 512mb of ram, you are all set.

You main cost will be you video card, you need one. This is one http://directron.com/xr98sec3l.html , but there are better deals from what I am told. If you research it, it isn't expensive to upgrade.

Oh, I bought a case too, http://directron.com/860busb.html

All the graphics and textures are stored on the front end on your computer...you connection type has no bearing on video or vise-versa.
Connection WILL however, effect plane positions that are relayed to your front end....warps and lags as the positions are updated non-optimally to your front end.
